Would this bother you?

I like the name Fern. Problem is that our next door neighbour has a daughter called Fern - she's around 21 and currently lives with them. We moved in about a year or so ago and don't hang out with them or anything, and I'm sure we'll move at some point, maybe in a few years. I don't know why it bothers me, but it does - what do you think, would it be weird? And do you even like the name Fern?

It wouldn't bother me at all (unless she was awful and it sullied the name maybe).

I think Fern is fine. No strong opinion either way.

Not weird at all. Fern is fine - not my favourite botanical name, but nice enough.

My neighbour of 6 years has just called her child my name. We know each other to say hello to and to have a quick chat and exchange Christmas cards and so I didn't find it weird at all - it's just a name and I'm glad she likes it! I would like to think that it was after me but I am under no illusion that this is the case!

No probs here. It wouldn't bother me. Nobody owns their name.

M0rT · 23/05/2021 23:57

A colleague in work gave her baby the same name as me.
We were freindly but not friends and she explained that she wasn't named after me. I had guessed that Grin
I was just glad that knowing me hadn't turned her off the name. I think most people would look at it like that.
Fern is a nice name and a bit different without being odd. I think you should go for it.
Best of luck.

I'd be a bit Hmm if I were your NDN and my dd were still a baby, but even so, you'd still be entitled to use it. The neighbour's adult dd would have nothing to do with your dd though - no connection at all. Even if the NDN commented, it would be easy to say "Oh, I'd forgotten that was your dd's name - not really knowing her of course". End of.

As you ask, no, it's not a name I'm keen on.
