Not for me, but a friend. Opinions on names Polly and Fern please! Do the names sound okay together? Any middle name ideas?

Love Fern. Polly is also nice, but possibly feels a bit insubstantial as a full name, plus there are quite a lot of kid's songs about Polly, which would put me off a bit. Still a nice, underused name though. I think they sound fine together, though I'd probably go for another naturey name - Rose / Rosa, Iris, Sylvie / Sylvia etc.

daisypond · 23/05/2021 20:09

I think they work well. I like both. I don’t think two nature names are a good idea.

NuffSaidSam · 23/05/2021 20:11

It makes me think of Holly (Willoughby) and Fern (Cotton) but that's probably quite a niche reference!

I think they're both fine.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/05/2021 20:45

Fern is nice enough (although I personally prefer the sound of similar underused botanicals like Hazel, Bryony, Jessamine etc). Polly isn't my taste, but I know a lot of people love it - I prefer similar old style nn's like Nell or May which don't sound as cute/sweet to me.

Because Fern and Polly are relatively uncommon, I'd consider using more popular Top 100 but "classic" names for the middles - Sophia/Sophie, Olivia, Charlotte, Alice, Elizabeth, Emily etc.

I had a cat called Fern because of her colour. Would Bracken be a suitable substitute for Polly?

TatianaBis · 23/05/2021 20:52

Love Polly. Not so keen on Fern. And a bit random together.

Polly and Nancy
Polly and Nell
Polly and Iris

TatianaBis · 23/05/2021 20:52

Fern always reminds me of air freshener and loo cleaner tbh.

girlmama32 · 23/05/2021 20:53

I like fern, not too keen on Polly. a friend of mine has just called her DD Fearne and has an older DD Alice

PPCD · 23/05/2021 20:56

I think Holly and Fern work better together because they are both nature names.

VenusClapTrap · 23/05/2021 21:17

I like them both and think they sound fine together.

PetraRabbit · 23/05/2021 22:51

I quite like them together.

SoapboxFox · 23/05/2021 22:59

I think they sound a bit twee TBH

subbysammiexoxo · 23/05/2021 23:09

I like fern but I think of polly pocket

scrivette · 23/05/2021 23:22

I think they sound lovely together.

lottiegarbanzo · 23/05/2021 23:29

Polypodium, a type of fern.

elfran · 24/05/2021 09:01

I like Polly a lot and think they sound fine together, though I slightly prefer something like Faye alongside Polly. I'd go for longer, more traditional or romantic middles, like Fern Penelope and Polly Victoria .

Are they for twins? Or is one an existing child?

ladycarlotta · 24/05/2021 11:09

I feel like they shouldn't match but they do actually sound lovely together - simple and breezy.

Regularsizedrudy · 24/05/2021 11:26

I like them and think they “go” really nicely together

Flymetothestars · 24/05/2021 20:30

Both really nice

Flymetothestars · 24/05/2021 20:30

Especially Polly

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 24/05/2021 21:00

Love Polly. Less keen on Fern but still a nice name

JemimaJoy · 25/05/2021 05:03

Yes, for twins! Love the idea of longer, Victorian middle names - I'll suggest to her. Actually the names came to her in a dream and while pregnancy dream names are often insane (I had a fair few myself, anyone else?) these have really grown on her and her friends (me included!) really like them together. I like how they don't match but also somehow sound right together!

Fern is lovely. Louisa?

Thisisjaaam · 25/05/2021 09:33

I love Polly
Fern is so harsh sounding and abrupt. I really don’t like it!
