Thoughts on the name Iara (pronounced Yara)?

I read it as Lara. It might not bother you, but it might be something worth considering

StevieNix · 22/05/2021 20:09

Are you a big game of thrones fan?
It just made me think of yara Greyjoy from game of thrones, but if that doesn’t bother you at all then the sound of the name itself is quite nice

Thisisjaaam · 22/05/2021 20:10

I like how it’s pronounced but I read it as Lara

GaraMedouar · 22/05/2021 20:13

I would probably spell it Yara as Iara looks like Lara with a little ‘l’ so she’ll spend her life pronouncing it to people.
I prefer Lara though I think. (Or Gara is nice too Wink)

EssentialHummus · 22/05/2021 20:14

Not sure. I know the Arab name Ya’ara, I guess I’d assume it was a version of that. I think Y might work better than I here if you’re set on it.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/05/2021 20:19

I thought it would be pronounced eye- ara

riotlady · 22/05/2021 20:23

Looks like you’ve forgotten to capitalise Lara

DramaAlpaca · 22/05/2021 21:48

It'd be better spelled Yara.

RuthW · 22/05/2021 22:00

If you want it pronounced Yara, spell it Yara, otherwise it's Lara

RuthW · 22/05/2021 22:01

I see now, it's an i and not a L. Everyone will make the same mistake as me.

Anoisagusaris · 22/05/2021 22:02

Iarla is an Irish boy’s name pronounced Ear-la, so my first thought was it was pronounced Ear-a, but that just shows my ignorance!

DalPalak · 22/05/2021 22:11

I also thought you had written Lara with a lowercase "L". Yara is pretty and a more straightforward spelling.

georgarina · 22/05/2021 22:14

Thanks all. I got tripped up on the Lara/Iara thing too, so good to know it's not just me

nocoolnamesleft · 22/05/2021 22:17

I'm afraid that after I realised it wasn't Lara, my next guess was pronounciation Eye-ara. Agree that Yara would be more likely to get the pronunciation you want.

Livpool · 22/05/2021 22:17

I woud assume e a different pronunciation but love the Yara spelling

Terrazzo · 22/05/2021 22:17

Yes I saw your thread title and thought ‘oop, forgot to capitalise the L, looks like Ee-ara’. Which I actually like, and Yara, but a non-capitalised Lara will always be more likely than iara. People will always err on the side of Lara, I reckon.

partyatthepalace · 22/05/2021 23:30

I think people will read it as Lara all the flippin time, so would use Yara, which I think is also an established spelling. It’s nice. Zara is also a nice alternative

funnyoldonion · 22/05/2021 23:34

I'm another one who thought you'd not capitalised your L and I think she'd spend her whole life going on about it although I do think it's a pretty name, any other Y names you like? Yasmin?

Blowingagale · 22/05/2021 23:42

I thought it was misspelled Lara. Knowing it is capital I my first guess at pronouncing it would be Eye-ara. I think use Yara. From what I can see Yara is regularly used. Either meaning (Brazilian water goddess or Arabic small butterfly) seem fine.

cocoloco987 · 23/05/2021 03:48

She'll definitely forever be called Lara - or Eye-ara for the few that realise it's not an L

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/05/2021 04:11

Agree with pp's - use Yara instead. The Iara spelling will just cause confusion. I like all the -ara names, they have a pretty sound.

TentTalk · 24/05/2021 14:32

Lovely sounding name, but awful written down!
