What are your thoughts on these 3 girls names

Josephine - would Effie work as a nn?

Marsha - due a revival as Martha is quite popular?

Amalia

I like Josephine

Marsha...I much much prefer Martha

Amalia would get called Amelia all the time. Not keen

DramaAlpaca · 17/05/2021 21:57

I think Effie is a fairly standard diminutive of Josephine. Not one I'd use myself, it's too fluffy.

Marsha - hmm, I don't think it's due a revival yet. It's not a biblical classic like Martha although it's certainly less dreary.

Amalia is unusual and pretty, but too frilly for me.

TatianaBis · 17/05/2021 22:18

Marsha is not due a revival, it’s grim. Like Martha though.

Like Josephine.

Tillygetsit · 17/05/2021 22:46

I like Marsha but prefer Marcia. It sounds softer to me and not as frumpy as Martha.
Amalia is ok and Josephine lovely.
Personally I prefer Josie to Effie which always sounds sweary to me.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/05/2021 00:02

Love Josephine - classic but underused and Effie is a perfectly reasonable and nice nn (although you might have to use it from day 1 to avoid the more commonplace Jo/Josie).

I can't see Marsha coming back soon, it's a touch 70's feeling. Maybe Marcia as -ia names are quite popular.

Amalia is lovely - very elegant and European sounding but because Amelia is so popular currently, you may risk confusion (if you are UK based?).

JemimaJoy · 18/05/2021 00:12

Josephine is beautiful and Effie is an amazing nickname! Please choose this! My imaginary next daughter's name Grin

MercyBodle · 18/05/2021 01:43

Effie is fine as a nn for Josephine. This is my favourite from your list.

I'm not keen on either Marsha or Amalia. I didn't think Martha was that popular? I do prefer Martha over these.

PassGo · 18/05/2021 07:33

I like Josephine but am not keen on Effie. Marsha is too marshy. Amalia is nice and unusual.

Orangebug · 18/05/2021 07:35

I like Effie. Prefer Martha to Marsha. Amalia is pretty but I agree there might be Amelia confusion.

partyatthepalace · 18/05/2021 09:21

Like Josephine - unusual but classic - and yes Effie works well as nn.

Amalia will just be super annoying because people will misspell as Amelia or Emilia both of which are mega popular - and basically it’s the same overused name.

Marsha is grim IMO. Even worse than dreary Martha (biblical kitchen drudge).

Marcia - the European pronunciation with 3 syllables - is nice.

Junipersky · 18/05/2021 11:08

I like Josephine and Effie works perfectly as a nn. Less commonly used than Josie (which I also like).

I love Amalia. So pretty and I don't know any at all.
She may get fed up of correcting people who call her Amelia, but there are lots of names that often need correcting when people get them wrong.

I don't like Marsha, but love Martha.
Marcia as others have suggested is also really pretty (and unusual). She called be called Marcie as a nn.

bridgetreilly · 18/05/2021 15:08

Josephine is lovely. I would shorten it to Josie, not Effie, though.

I don't like Amalia or Marsha at all. Marsha is just a misspelling of Marcia. Martha is lovely.

Cindie943811A · 18/05/2021 16:17

I dislike Effie as a nn and prefer Fina which is more elegant if you want to avoid Josie.
Amalia is lovely and Marcia is unusual and nice.
I don’t know why Martha is so popular as it sounds stodgy to me. Marsha is rather American.

KirstenBlest · 19/05/2021 11:21

Josephine - would Effie work as a nn? I like Josephine but not Effie (Effin' awful)

Marsha - due a revival as Martha is quite popular? It's nice and a bit different. Some might spell it Marcia, but that could give you Marcie as a nn.

Amalia - Too close to the overused Amelia

emmathedilemma · 19/05/2021 11:58

The only Effie I know is a Stephanie / Stephie / Effie it wouldn't occur to me to use it for Josephine. Josie is ok, Effie is a bit ugly.
There's a reason why Marsha hasn't had a revival!
Amalia is ok but would you spend a lot of time saying "not Amelia, it's got an A in the middle"?

stuckinarutatwork · 19/05/2021 14:14

Josephine is ok.

The other two - people will just assume they're Martha and Amelia and they'll spend their lives correcting folk.

Twinkie01 · 19/05/2021 14:50

Marsha isn't pretty at all, sounds like a frosty Corrie character.

Effie I'd be worried about Eff off. Josie is nicer.

Amalia, sounds like a made up name or a mishearing/saying if Amelia.

HeadlessGummyBears · 20/05/2021 02:25

Josephine sounds lovely. I particularly like the nicknames Joey and Sephy/Sefi.
