Hi all,

I’ve just found out I’m having a baby boy, so I’d love some more modern sounding baby names suggestions. The reason I say modern is my family are white British so are very hostile to anything ‘too exotic’ (for want of a better phrase). My hubby’s family is quite large so a lot of names have been taken:

Already gone is zakariya, ali, Harris, kamran, zaid, zayn, zayyan, isa, musa (and about a million others)

So far we like: Deen, Aydin /Aiden and Rayan.

Any other suggestions? We already have girl named Ayah XX

I came on to suggest Idris which is both an Arabic and British (well, Welsh) name.
www.britishbabynames.com/blog/2014/07/idris.html

Might it keep both sides happy? Are you using middle names? Could you use a muslim first name and a british middle name?

Ultimately though it's none of your family's business what you call your child, nor is it any of his family's business.

I sympathise because I'm Welsh and DH English, my family will be upset if we don't use a Welsh name and his family will be upset if we use a Welsh name or anything which isn't very traditional and/or biblical, like Elizabeth.

Very tempting to pick a name like Cassia which both sides will hate equally and use the middle name/s to reflect respective heritages!

Otherwise we will look at names which work well in both cultures, like Tomos and Betsi.

The only thing which matters is that both you and DH like the name. Don't let either set of parents bother you into changing the name or using a name you don't love.

Thank you all so much for commenting! Flowers

We do use English middle names, a nice way to placate my mum as my daughter has a very Muslim yet easily pronounced name- we went with my grandmas name. This time I think we’ll use my dad’s name as a middle name! This definitely helps!

So many of the names are taken, it’s the problem with such a large family lol! Our top pics right now are Aiden, Rayan, Dean, Asher and Elias- watch both sides hate the names lol.

We thought about Idris too, but I have a bit of a crush on Idris Elba so probably best to avoid lol.

Ps @BabiSiarc I absolutely love the name Cassia! Xx

@wanadu2022 thank you for the suggestions, lovely names but I think most likely a bit too ‘exotic’ for my side of the family (they are incredibly intolerant and not the type to let stuff go unfortunately) xx

Asher is lovely, OP. The only one I've met was a really sweet kid. And Ash would be such a cool nickname!

roadwarrior · 20/05/2021 13:12

I like Asher too. Dean and Elias are also really nice. It doesn't matter in the end if your parents or in laws hate the name. I think in the end they'll get used to it. My niece is called Jenna (as in "heaven") and the in-laws hated it at first but now no one mentions it. Smile

Sleeplessemma · 20/05/2021 15:05

@roadwarrior you’d think they’d get over it wouldn’t you, but my mother still refuses to pronounce my daughter’s name properly because she has an ‘aversion’ to it. In laws can be like a dog with a bone too... for years they tried to rename me... I’ve been called Miriam, Khadijah and iman by them 😑 none of which I’ve responded to or chosen myself or even accepted as my name. It’s tedious. I’m less concerned with them though, as if it’s a Muslim name they’ll shut up eventually. I’m a bit of an anything for an easy life person (within reason of course) xx

I'm right with you there @Sleeplessemma , I hate confrontation with my in-laws! But it's your baby, give him a name you love. Smile

drumandthebass · 20/05/2021 17:15

I love Omar

Allllchange · 20/05/2021 17:22

I love the name Rohan and its meaning.

Allllchange · 20/05/2021 17:23

Seen it used by Muslim and non Muslim families and not too common.

PrincessTuna · 20/05/2021 17:24

I liked your shortlist. I like Laith too.

It's very thoughtful of you to try to accommodate everyone. In my experience once baby arrives and has a name people love the name cos it is attached to someone they love.

Allllchange · 20/05/2021 19:15

Ooh and I love Cassia too

Pawprints2017 · 20/05/2021 23:27

We liked Kareem or Ayan.
My little boys name is in your 'taken list. Same spelling and everything. Good luck!

Pawprints2017 · 20/05/2021 23:31

Also loved Casper too.
