Modern sounding Muslim baby boy names please :)

Hi all,

I’ve just found out I’m having a baby boy, so I’d love some more modern sounding baby names suggestions. The reason I say modern is my family are white British so are very hostile to anything ‘too exotic’ (for want of a better phrase). My hubby’s family is quite large so a lot of names have been taken:

Already gone is zakariya, ali, Harris, kamran, zaid, zayn, zayyan, isa, musa (and about a million others)

So far we like: Deen, Aydin /Aiden and Rayan.

Any other suggestions? We already have girl named Ayah XX

I am guessing dad is Muslim? Has he a country tie that you could look at for it necessarily religious names?

mentaltodolist · 17/05/2021 07:52

I love Armon!

Sleeplessemma · 17/05/2021 07:54

We both are :)
I’d rather not going to a figure in the community or a religious figures tbh for privacy (the community it quite nosey and gossipy) and also they’ll most likely recommend very religious names such as Abdullah or abdur rahman, which are perfectly lovely names but wouldn’t be acceptable to my parents xx

Here's a list of my Muslim pupils (ages 11 to 14, so possibly 'modern' I suppose), I'm in France :

Ridwan
Ayoub
Anouar
Marwan
Ibrahim
Reda
Sami
Adem
Soliman
Muamer
Karim
Brahim
Ahmed

A woman I follow on Instagram called her son Mica. I never knew that was a Muslim name until then.

She is quite 'modern' as well.

whoami24601 · 17/05/2021 08:02

We have an Aamil which I think is lovely. Also know a baby Rayan which (depending where you live) might need to be explained. Disclaimer: not Muslim so no idea about origins of these names!

Sleeplessemma · 17/05/2021 08:04

@Twizbe ah yeah I think I know who you mean, whenever I hear Mika though I just think of the singer who did that song grace Kelly or big girls you are beautiful lol, so I don’t think we could use that.

It’s so hard xx

We had similar issues, except we are both from Muslim cultural backgrounds and one of my parents is English and had real trouble pronouncing some names. I pushed through those that were appropriate to my cultural heritage but still Muslim so they probably aren’t helpful for you. But if I had to think again of names:

Daniyal (Daniel)
Ilyas (Ellias)
Idris (the Elba connection may help with your family and it is a lovely name, I think it also is a Welsh name - though I am sure someone will know better than me)
Mikhail (angel Michael, I’m not a nn fan but Mika is obvious)
Rafail (again Rafa/Rafi)

Are there cultural names that might work. E.g. Jem is a name where I am from and though we spell it differently it works in English.

Sleeplessemma · 17/05/2021 08:13

I live in the UK btw.

Mohammed? I just think my parents would go nuts, we have enough trouble getting them to call my daughter by her name. It’s also very very common in the Muslim community, there’s a side of his family where every male is called mohammed and then they go by their middle name xx

I think we may be married to men from the same cultural background. This is something his family do too, we don’t use Mohammed where my family are from. It’s actively frowned upon - sort of revered.

Sleeplessemma · 17/05/2021 08:18

@StColumbofNavron south East Asian? Pakistan? X

I think Rayan is fabulous

StColumbofNavron · 17/05/2021 08:24

Close. Bangladesh.

Sleeplessemma · 17/05/2021 08:25

@StColumbofNavron still I think it’s a very similar cultural thing with names ie Mohammed xx

Aran

StColumbofNavron · 17/05/2021 08:28

Definitely. I’m not South Asian and it just isn’t done where I am from.

We always immediately agreed on lovely girls names and boys were so hard, and we had 3 of them!

Chunkymenrock · 17/05/2021 08:31

As your daughter has a Muslim name, I'd give your next child a British name. Both sides of their heritage equally represented.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/05/2021 08:44

Our religious family members have all gone for ‘classic’ rather than religious names. Ones that work on both cultures. Even the very religious ones.

mumulala · 17/05/2021 08:45

Faris

Also wanted to say sorry for your parents intolerant attitude, that must be hard for you.
