Naming my daughter Atlas?

I’m really starting to love Atlas for a little girl. Originally this was our boy name, and I still love it for a boy too. Could we use it for either gender? Big sister is Aurora.
Aurora and Atlas as sisters?

I have met two child Atlases
One male, one female.
I still have a mental picture of a burly man holding up the world, however.

rbetty · 12/05/2021 00:12

I love it

OppsUpsSide · 12/05/2021 00:12

I think it is definitely a boys name, but if you want to use it go for it

LittleBearPad · 12/05/2021 00:13

I think it’s a boys name. It doesn’t translate well to a girl.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/05/2021 00:18

How about Atlanta, or Athena?

dollypartonshirspray · 12/05/2021 00:18

Not for me

Geordieoldgirl · 12/05/2021 00:18

It’s just my opinion, but it seems very masculine for a girl. Have you thought about Atlanta ? Slightly similar to Atlas, but definitely a girl’s name.

timeisnotaline · 12/05/2021 00:21

It is absolutely a boys name. Also, I’d expect lots of Ayn Rand jokes. Although maybe you’re a huge fan already.

bluebell34567 · 12/05/2021 00:22

not for me either. imagine calling 'Atlaaas'. sounds weird.

partyatthepalace · 12/05/2021 00:23

Atlas is a bruiser who carries the world on his back, so no - you might as well call her Hercules

Aster, Astra, Astrid...

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 12/05/2021 00:24

Antigone?

Enough4me · 12/05/2021 00:26

I really can't see Atlas for a girl. I'd compare it to using John for a girl.
Atlanta would be a lovely name though.

Flowers500 · 12/05/2021 00:27

It’s a very male name in my mind

avamiah · 12/05/2021 00:29

Yes I like it, put it this way it’s a name you won’t forget in a hurry .
I have one child, a girl and always wanted to have another but it never happened but I had the name all picked out if I had a boy.
I would of called him Jet .

MercyBodle · 12/05/2021 00:36

While it's not a name I love for either sex, I think it's okay for a girl. However I don't think it works with sister Aurora. One sister gets a mainstream strong woman's name and another gets a quite unusual gender-neutral - usually male- name? They feel very unequal, and while I think each child needs their own distinct name this pair sets up for comparison and envy. I wouldn't want to be Atlas especially if my sister was Aurora.

Gothichouse40 · 12/05/2021 00:37

Im sorry but Atlas, no, it wouldn't be my choice. How about Angela, Amanda, Aria, Alice?

Gothichouse40 · 12/05/2021 00:38

Alisha?

MadMadMadamMim · 12/05/2021 00:52

Well it's not a girls name, is it? You might as well call her Hercules.

tableanadchairs · 12/05/2021 00:55

Please don’t saddle your daughter with that name.
You could call her Dictionary l suppose - equally awful 😂

SemperIdem · 12/05/2021 00:56

A celebrity has called her daughter Atlas relatively recently.

Aurora is very feminine and Atlas is most certainly not. People would assume the latter is male automatically but especially when paired with Aurora.

It is akin to naming two boys Hunter and Sophie.

Enough4me · 12/05/2021 00:59

Aurora and Atlanta sound like sisters.

AnotherSunrise · 12/05/2021 01:09

No!

Thedogscollar · 12/05/2021 01:13

Ridiculous and cruel

DramaAlpaca · 12/05/2021 01:17

No. Just no. She'll feel very short changed when she compares her name to that of her sister. Atlas is such a strong, male name it doesn't work for a girl at all.

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/05/2021 01:18

A man with the weight of the heavens on his shoulders.

Just the ticket for a little girl Hmm
