<Sigh> Boys names. What do you think of these?

There is only one boys name in existence that I love, and I have already used that for DS1. I think it's probably bad practice to use the same name for subsequent children, so I think I'm just going to have to make do with something that I don't think is too awful for this one.

Here is my list. Thoughts please? And any other ideas?

Nathaniel
Evan
Ralph/Ralf

Actually, I think that's it. I'm just so stuck for ideas.

I really like Evan and I don't mind Ralph. Not so keen on Nathaniel but there's nothing wrong with it, I'd shorten it to Nate myself.

17caterpillars1mouse · 10/05/2021 14:03

Nathaniel - I love Nathaniel. It was very high on our names list (we had girls) I'm just not a huge fan of Nate, I don't mind it just don't love it

Evan - it's nice, I only know onr
Ralph/Ralf - not a fan though I love Rafe

A few other suggestions...

Ewan
Owen
Tobias
Elijah
Ezra
Rafferty
Rowan
Isaac
Nicholas

EvilOnion · 10/05/2021 14:07

Evan and Nathaniel were on our list.

It's worth considering that Nathan/Nate will most likely become nicknames if you have Particular dislike of those.

Also had Liam, Aaron, Ruairi, Lucas and Isaac.

Serpenta · 10/05/2021 14:09

I like both Nathaniel and Evan.

Not so keen on Ralph.

BackforGood · 10/05/2021 14:11

I quite like Evan

Not keen on Ralph / Ralf - no particular logical reason though

Nathaniel is okay too, though does seen like quite a lot of spare syllables compared with Nathan (?) - so I'm no help Grin

romdowa · 10/05/2021 14:12

Nathaniel is one of my most favourite names and I would use it in a heart beat if I didn't have a thick irish accent and didn't totally butcher the name.

Serpenta · 10/05/2021 14:15

The only Nathaniel I know doesn't shorten his name and I do find it a pleasant name to say aloud.

Dopeysofee · 10/05/2021 14:16

I like Nathaniel and would shorten it to Nate

lucymagoo · 10/05/2021 14:17

I like Ralph, not keen on Evan, what about something similar like Emmett?

Terrazzo · 10/05/2021 14:23

I have an Evan and the other 2 were on our lists so I am a fan :) If it matters to you, there is another Evan in nursery with DS (we’re nowhere near Wales!) and a Ewan and a Euan in the class below.

Boys names are SO hard, if our number 3 is another boy we are screeeeewed!

Our list, if it helps, although I’m not mad on any of them:

Gabriel
Rory
Daniel
Dominic
Nicholas
Frankie
Laurie
Austin
Cameron

Terrazzo · 10/05/2021 14:24

Oh also Max and Lucas but don’t work with our surname but May for you!

Allium16 · 10/05/2021 14:25

Thank you all.

I'm not sure I like Nate although I don't know why as it has a similar vibe to DS1's name. Nat doesn't work for me at all. So I would want to keep it as Nathaniel but am very aware that as he got older he would become a Nat or Nate. And I really want to call him the same things as his friends - my husband is Timothy but I have only ever known him as Tim and his friends have only ever known him as Tim - but his parents and brother only ever call him Timothy. I dunno why but it always feels like his family are a bit disconnected from his wider life because they know him by something different to everyone else in his life. (Yes yes I realise I am probably over thinking things).

Maybe I need to get a bit more used to Nate.

Re: Nathan/Nathaniel - I went to school with one of each - they could not have been more different in terms of personality so I've always considered Nathan/Nathaniel to be completely different names!!

Ethan
Max
Mason
Jack

Bimblybomeyelash · 10/05/2021 14:30

I like Nathaniel and Nat, but not Nate or Nathan (has a totally different feel IMO).

How about:

Daniel
Gabriel
Rory
Ellis
Benjamin
Laurence

Arrierttyclock · 10/05/2021 14:40

Ralph is my front runner for my DC atm

AmyG10 · 10/05/2021 14:51

I love the name Evan. My brother in law is Evan and is the nicest bloke, I think it always helps if you know someone nice with the name. It’s not popular either, don’t know anyone else with that name

emmathedilemma · 10/05/2021 14:54

I quite like Evan, it's a bit different but not too off the wall.
I can't stand Ralph or Rafe, they're such abrupt names.

ILoveShula · 10/05/2021 14:57

Nathaniel - too long and slightly whiney
Evan - nice
Ralph/Ralf - spelling issues. Ralf might avoid getting the Raife pronunciation but will be spelt Ralph at times.

cptartapp · 10/05/2021 15:10

Evan is lovely. Don't like the others.
Adam
Elias
Zachary

Rainbow321 · 10/05/2021 15:51

Of you like Evan , how about Euan or Ethan ?

I'm due a little boy in 3 months and we are naming him Reginald on his official paper work but we will call him Reggie ☺️
IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/05/2021 20:11

If you don't like Nate, what about Nathaniel with the nn Han instead? (As in Han Solo, can't imagine a little boy who wouldn't find that cool).

I do like Evan too though - nice and simple but underused. Rafe/Ralph isn't my taste, sorry.

Agree with pp that Owen as a similar vibe to Evan (as do fellow Welsh boys names Dylan, Tristan and Macsen).

Flymetothestars · 10/05/2021 20:18

Nathaniel is nice

Interesting comment about the Tim /Timothy @Allium16 which I will mull over (because I'm sad like that), funnily enough I think the opposite about my family. I feel like there's a nice connection in calling someone something they were called in childhood as you knew them before everyone else shortened their name or changed it, it signals out who's known someone the longest. I'm overthinking it too arent I!

Love Tristan, Nathaniel
Evan is alright
I don't like Ralph as much as your other options

Wilfred
Christopher Kit
Laurence
Eric
Ellis
Austin
Vincent

What's your first sons name out of interest

JackieeWeaver · 10/05/2021 21:02

Love all of your choices. Evan is quite understated but cool. And Rory is one of my faves too!

user1493494961 · 10/05/2021 21:16

Nathaniel by far.
