What is your opinion on this name and how would you pronounce it?

I really like it. I would pronounce it May-a but I know a lot of people would pronounce it My-a which is what puts me off using it personally, because I like May-a but not as keen on My-a.

Minikievs · 09/05/2021 17:41

I have two friends with daughters called Maya.
One is May-a the other is My-a
I'm forever forgetting which way round it is.
Another friend has a Mya, which is much easier to remember the pronunciation, obviously.

I prefer the May-a pronunciation

AnonGlitterBomb · 09/05/2021 17:42

My-a
Wouldn’t occur to be to pronounce it as May-a unless otherwise corrected

tiredanddangerous · 09/05/2021 17:43

I work in a secondary school and we have a lot of Mayas. Some are May-a and some are My-a. It's hard to keep track of sometimes and probably a bit annoying for the Mayas.

sunkiss · 09/05/2021 17:43

Thank you for responding. I much prefer the May-a pronunciation too, struggling to find a name I like as much for baby due in summer.

I prefer the Maia spelling and think that this is more likely to have the pronunciation you want, although on paper it should be the other way round really.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 09/05/2021 17:56

I like it!! Think I prefer he My-a pronunciation. Popular name in Eastern Europe where it is usually spelt Maja (and pronounced My-a)

SusannahSophia · 09/05/2021 18:22

I’d pronounce it May-a. I do know a Maia who pronounces it My-a.

Stevearnottsbeard · 09/05/2021 18:25

Maya-may-a
Mya- my-a
Mia- me-a
That's how I look at them. It's a nice name but all the different pronunciations would put me off as I feel I'd be forever correcting people

sunkiss · 09/05/2021 19:17

Thanks for the feedbackSmile

I teach a May-a and she goes mad with people if call her my-a its one of those names that depends on the pronoun and people aren't always going to know which is the right way.

somethinginoffensive · 09/05/2021 19:24

A Maya pronounced My-a I know quite likes visiting Spain because that's one place she doesn't have to correct the pronunciation.

sunflowertulip · 09/05/2021 19:28

I'd spell it Maia if you want the May-a pronunciation. I'd say it My-a.

I like them both!

DotDotDotDotDot · 09/05/2021 19:45

I think you have to be quite laid back about how people pronounce it if you choose this name, otherwise it will be annoying for you. This thread proves there’s no consensus. What about May instead? I think it’s simplicity is what makes it so nice.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/05/2021 19:52

It's lovely. I'd guess May -ah first in the UK but My-ah in other countries. But I must admit I've heard both Maya and Maia pronounced both ways - I think like Esme, two pronunciations seem to be used almost equally here.

Kitkat151 · 09/05/2021 20:01

I know of 3.....all pronounced Mya.... it’s a popular name in Denmark and prounounced Mya there to.

Frogsonglue · 09/05/2021 20:07

I know a Maya pronounced Mya but lots of people pronounce it Me-a...

sunkiss · 09/05/2021 20:20

Oh I’ve never heard of it pronounced me-a before, I assumed that was Mia

I really like it!

I would also pronounce it My-a.
I'd pronounce Maia as My-a as well though!

Marlena1 · 09/05/2021 20:34

I love this and wish I'd thought of it for my first.

TokenGinger · 09/05/2021 20:40

I'd pronounced it May-a, too. I can't fathom how anybody would pronounce it My-a. I don't think know any word that has "ay" and it's pronounced just with the "y" (I may well be wrong).

I know somebody who spelt their daughter's Maiya to avoid the mispronunciation.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 09/05/2021 21:20

We know a Myla.....quite like that too!

ILoveStickers · 09/05/2021 21:34

@TokenGinger Well, Maya like the Maya civilization, I suppose. And the Mayan language. Those are always pronounced "My-a".

The Maya I know is My-a, but she is Indian. It's a concept from Hinduism I think, in her case? So it is a word with a particular pronunciation in another language.

I think both pronunciations are equally used in the UK. Both are nice!

Tillygetsit · 09/05/2021 22:50

My dainty pretty girl dog is Maya. Suits her and I obviously love her and the name.
She is a May-a.

partyatthepalace · 09/05/2021 23:05

Dull, undistinguished and overused.

Gets pronounced My-ah, Mee-ah and May-ah, which would be annoying and is another reason not to use it.
