Why on earth would anyone want to choose a 'sinister' name for their baby?! Are you a sinister person? Do you hang out with sinister people? Do you want your child to hang out with sinister people?

Being gothy when you're a suburban teenager and want to shock your neighbours and parents is quite interesting and 'edgy' I suppose, but why put that on your baby?

You might think it's naughty and rebellious to do graveyard chic, but is that seriously what you want for your child?

There was a goth baby at a group we went to and her Mum was called Morticia (Granny was a white witch 🧙‍♀️ seemingly) and the baby was called Grezelda!!

Wouldn't be my choice but they were absolutely lovely people and very quirky

Someone upthread mentioned the name Marian. Unless there is another meaning to Marian that I don't know about this is the least dark and gothic name I could imagine.
A Marian year is a designation given by the Catholic Church to calendar years in which Mary is to be particularly reverenced and celebrated. There was one in 1954 hence the proliferation of middle aged Marians in Ireland today.

Someone else also said Fia is the Irish for flame. It's not. It's the Irish for deer.
Lasair means flame. There is an old Irish name Lasairfhíona (Lass-er-eena) which means flame of wine.

I always thought of my name as a bit twee in my goth phase, I shortened to Mel because 90’s.

Yes, but (spoiler) she's not very bright, is easily emotionally manipulated by a male character and ends up dead.

I'm another one urging caution with gothic names, and I'm speaking as someone who has one in real life as well as on here. Check up on its historical, biblical, literary and pop cultural connotations: it's not fair to lumber a child with the name of a literary or historical murderer, victim, spawn of satan, or one from a well known song that she might have sung at her several times a year. Names like Lily, Rose and Ivy are gothic but don't come with baggage and won't pigeonhole her into an identity that she may not grow up to share.

Ive seen Lilith mentioned a lot, but what about a slight alternative- Tanith. She was an ancient moon Goddess, and is a name often chosen by witches.
