Hi everyone! We’re expecting a baby boy soon and are struggling to settle on a name. We have a 3yo called Hugo and the names we’re considering for this baby are
Felix
Montgomery (Monty)
Theodore (we’d call him this, not Theo or Teddy and would ask school to do the same)

So far most feedback has been that people will create nicknames for Theodore but we have a friend whose kids are Christian and Alexander and that’s exactly what they are called (they’re now in senior school). We also have a friend wi the a little Catherine who doesn’t go by a nickname.

Thoughts?

Montgomery and Theodore are great.
You won’t be able to control him shortening it as a teen, but it’s his name so up to him.

I don’t like Felix personally

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/05/2021 12:09

Felix is okay.

You may not like Theo or Teddy but What would you do when Theodore gets older and decides he wants to be known as Theo or Teddy. You can't say to him when he's 15 'Don't shorten your own name. Everyone is entitled to a,name and/or a,preferred name.

SummaLuvin · 01/05/2021 12:16

There will always be people who go by their full name, but you can't entirely remove the risk of nicknames, more often than not longer names are shortened. You might know Christian, Alexander, and Catherine with no shortening, but these are definitely the exceptions to the rule, your Theodore might be as well, but it is a risk and ultimately it will his choice not yours.

I like Montgomery (Monty) more than Felix.

jacinthalt · 01/05/2021 12:16

YES YES YES!

I have a Felix and Monty is one of my DS’ middle names. You have excellent taste.

Ellmau · 01/05/2021 12:24

I like Felix the best of those.

Not keen on Theodore.

Montgomery/Monty has a nice sound but feels a bit surnamey/dog name for me.

Standrewsschool · 01/05/2021 12:26

Love your names.

You can’t prevent nicknames. Names such as Theodore and Montgomery will probably get shortened by their classmates, but then shorter names get lengthened - eg Mike becomes Mikey or Mickey,

StevieNix · 01/05/2021 12:26

Hugo and Felix sound so lovely together!

Violetlavenders · 01/05/2021 14:40

Hugo and Monty are lovely together.

Felix is a brand of cat food in the uk.

Theodore is nice but he could end up as Theo!

sarah13xx · 01/05/2021 15:31

I think Felix goes best with Hugo

drpet49 · 01/05/2021 16:07

Theodore.

Hate Montgomery. Felix is a bit dull.

Jeschara · 01/05/2021 16:09

Hugo and Felix are a lovely match.

SycamoreGap · 01/05/2021 16:12

We nick named our first child Monty before he was born - my Mum has horrified at the time. I still wish we’d been brave enough to use it!

stellarfox · 01/05/2021 20:25

I love Hugo, Monty and Theodore. With nicknames though I think you’ve got to assume they will be used! You can encourage the full name but he might choose to shorten it so if this is a deal breaker I’d avoid Theodore

diddlediddle · 01/05/2021 20:53

Montgomery by a mile. Monty. Cute, not overdone. The others are much more commonplace.

Peachbubble · 01/05/2021 20:56

I like Felix the best

Agree entirely!
LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/05/2021 21:00

I like Felix, but think Theodore 'goes' better with Hugo (unless you relax on Monty as a nn for Montgomery, which is brilliant)

What about Victor? That sounds good as a pair with Hugo...

Isitwineoclockyet2021 · 01/05/2021 21:07

Okay so I think we’ve ruled Theodore out as we don’t like Theo and really don’t like Teddy!
So it’s between Felix and Monty...
I think we’re leaning towards Felix with Montgomery as a middle name as many have mentioned that Monty sounds like a dogs name, but we’re not certain. We love both!!

I know a Hugo and Miles..

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/05/2021 16:25

Of the three I'd choose Felix - nice, slightly quirky sounding but classical. Theodore is more popular/trendy (and could have nn issues) and Montgomery is very marmite.

Anibas · 02/05/2021 18:36

I like Theodore best

mimirouge · 02/05/2021 21:12

Nice names but loads of Theodores at DD private school. Not many Felix though and a couple of Monty.

sibbys · 02/05/2021 21:19

Monty! What a brilliant name!
