I really like Isabelle but am not too keen on Izzy as a nickname. Is it inevitable?!

It’s pretty likely from friends etc, unless she’s got an established nickname of Bella or whatever instead.

whiteflower84 · 01/05/2021 11:08

I have an Isobel.. I tell people if they call her Izzy nicely Grin it's not her name and Isobel/Isabelle is a beautiful name so why shorten it Confused

Zarinea · 01/05/2021 11:11

You don’t need to use it, but I bet there’s a high chance she’ll get Izzy at school.

If it helps, I know a few Issi or Issys which looks less harsh to me.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 01/05/2021 11:19

You can control what people call a preschooler, but once she's at school it's up to her what she's happy with - she might like Izzy... If you always call her Bella that has a high likelihood of sticking, but if you simply insist her name is never to be shortened then you'e creating a completely unnecessary source of stress, frustration and annoyance for her and yourself, and ultimately can ask teachers to use her full name but can't control what peers call her - there will be a lot of eye rolling as she grows up.

If you strongly dislike a common short form either use another common nickname from day one or choose another name.

partyatthepalace · 01/05/2021 11:34

She might choose it as a teen - that or Bella.

Violetlavenders · 01/05/2021 14:41

Yes, unfortunately.

Isabel is nice but I'm not keen on Izzy.

ShoppingPrecinctPrincess · 01/05/2021 14:44

I'd avoid a name where you dislike the obvious shortenings because you do not want to be the parent who tries to control the nicknames that other people give your child. It's so embarrassing.

RuthW · 01/05/2021 15:10

My neice is Isabelle. She is always Belle.

VoyageInTheDark · 01/05/2021 15:12

I love Isabelle but have put it on my middle name list as I think Izzy is inevitable

MondeoFan · 01/05/2021 16:27

I have an Isobel. She is Izzy to all her friends. I quite like it tbh but as her Mum she will always be Isobel to me.

Changedname81 · 01/05/2021 16:34

The Isobel I know is called Ibby if that works?

Isobel so beautiful though - very melodic

EileenGC · 01/05/2021 16:38

I know a few Isabelles and all of them are known by their full name. In my experience, the child/teenager will be very blunt if they don't like a particular nickname and someone is using it without even asking them first. That said, your child might not mind the nickname but if it would bother you, maybe don't use it.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 01/05/2021 16:59

I know two Isabels that go by Bel/Belle and one Izzy that is her actual name as the parents didn't like the name Isabel?!
It's definitely not a given that she'd get called Izzy and as she gets older it would be her choice.

Santatizer · 01/05/2021 20:13

Completely understand it would be her choice as she gets older... I just think Isabelle / Isabel / Isobel is such a beautiful name and Izzy... just isn't Grin. I have a top two and will use one as first and one as middle, so I think Isabelle might have to go as the middle name...

diddlediddle · 01/05/2021 20:54

Don't choose Isabelle. It's so common now it's really lost its shine.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 01/05/2021 21:15

We used Isabelle as a middle name too. I'm not a fan of Izzy. But Isabelle is a beautiful name.

DariaMorgendorffer · 01/05/2021 22:09

You could shorten it to Belle, before it ever becomes Izzy.

Edenember · 01/05/2021 23:04

I think this is such a commonplace shortened form it’s as good as inevitable, unless you were to mitigate it by literally introduce her to everyone as Belle / Bella as if that were her full name... but this defeats the point of choosing a name that you love in its original form. Maybe keep Isabelle as the middle name. I’ve been wrestling with the same thing with Eliza / Ellie, I think Ellie for Eliza is far less likely than Izzy for Isabelle but I still think the possibility is enough to deter me from using it.

broccolimelon · 02/05/2021 15:50

I know someone who insists her daughter Isabella is called Bella and I just find it unbearably pretentious and naff 😅 sorry! If you want Bella just call her that. I mean, it's a boring name but people trying to control nicknames to me totally defeats the point of nicknames

Santatizer · 02/05/2021 17:02

I'm not keen on Belle or Bella either ha. I like Isabelle. I couldn't care less if it's commonplace - it doesn't stop it being a beautiful name. I might have it as a middle name instead. My other chosen name is also pretty popular now- this doesn't interest me remotely. The other name I like also has shortenings but I like them.
