Inspiration for middle names

Penny2020 · 28/04/2021 14:14

We’ve settled on a first name and are now trying to decide on a middle name and if we even want one. If I give a middle name I’d like it to mean something to us, and be a nice story for her otherwise we just won’t bother. Wondering if anyone has any ideas on what could inspire a middle name?

Obvious starting point would be a family name (all very ugly or boring sadly) so I started to think about favourite holiday memories (along the lines of Brooklyn, Austin for example) and got me wondering if anyone has anything else that inspired them...

Just to be clear, i wouldn’t burden my child with a Posh and Becks inspired name, just using it as an example Blush

Birthstone? Sapphire, Ruby, Opal for eg. Or mothers maiden names are others I've heard of

Love the birthstone idea! And if she stays in there a few days after her due date she’d be in June = Pearl. Lovely!
(May is Emerald which might be a bit much)

For DD2’s middle name, we used the spelling of a character from DH’s favourite franchise. We were already going to use the name.

Using the mothers maiden name is very usual in Scotland. We used family names for our two boys but picking something else for a reason would be nice.

My middle name (7th child so normal things such as grandmothers names etc all used up) was picked by my mum's friend who only had boys and was delighted to be able to choose a girls name.

You could choose a flower from your wedding bouquet (if you are married)? I think place names for a middle are also fine, even not that specific such as Asia to remember a holiday in Thailand or something.

We were going to give my grandpa’s middle name as the middle name but are now using my husband’s middle name. It’s not after anyone but a few people in his family have it as a middle name 🤷🏼‍♀️ I really struggled for boy middle names

People you admire from history/mythology - that's the route we're probably going to go down.

Character from a book/film or a flower you like, or the saints name of the church you married in. I would lay off obvious place names, as they have a bit of a naff vibe
