Hi I'm considering calling our baby either
Edward James Taylor
Sienna Rose Taylor

We won't be finding out the gender, we want a surprise.

Firstly, do you think these names go together well?
Secondly, I have a really big family unit, so most names have already been used, my friend has a boy called Edward, she isn't my best friend but we are close. Do you think it would be ok to still name the boy this? I did say to her whilst she was pregnant and told me potential names she likes that ne and my husband wanted that if we have a boy (as it means a lot to us).

Thanks

You've told her so it's fine. Unless Rose is a family name or you absolutely have your heart set on it I wouldn't use it. There are so many babies with Rose or Grace as a middle name at the moment it's almost like a default middle name.

Ellasmummyx1 · 24/04/2021 10:46

I like Edward but I’m not a fan of Sienna. Rose is a lovely name but as a middle name is a bit boring

Flymetothestars · 24/04/2021 11:19

Edward is a great choice and it's not a big deal about your friend I wouldn't give that another thought

Twizbe · 24/04/2021 11:44

I like the boys names. Not a huge fan of sienna or Rose, but it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks :)

As for your friend, I think it's fine to use the name. Especially a name like Edward that is a classic.

If you wanted to change it a bit Edmund is a wonderful name. Or you could do James Edward.

We were team green with both of ours as well.
We had a boys name picked both times but had about 3 or 4 girls names. Our daughter was nameless for a day while we decided which of those names fitted her. It wasn't our top choice that we went for in the end.

KezzabellaB · 24/04/2021 11:48

I think they're both lovely Edward would be absolutely fine to use too 😊

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/04/2021 18:31

Edward's a lovely popular classic - there will be a lot of Edward's about so it should be no big deal that a friend has already used the name imo. They will be different ages so not likely to be in the same social group that often to matter, plus Edward has a lot of nn choices so they wouldn't have to be Edward Initial and could use a nn instead.

Sienna isn't my taste - it's much more trendy feeling than Edward. I prefer similar sounding classics like Celia/Cecilia, Susanna or Serena myself, but Sienna is popular enough that many people must love it.

Rose and James are the most popular middle names for girls and boys respectively but if you don't mind that, they are lovely names.

pigglepot · 24/04/2021 18:53

To be totally honest I wouldn't use a name a close friend had used. It happened to me recently and means that name is now sadly off my list. I don't think it actually "matters" though unless it would be confusing if you see your friend with her children a lot or she would mind. Might be worth mentioning to her.

Sienna I really don't like. It's a bit naff to me, sorry! And I don't think Edward and Sienna are similar vein at all. Edward and Rose, Edward and Verity, Edward and Elodie, Edward and Martha, Edward and Lilly...etc, would go well if you want names that match in style. Edward is a classic abs traditional name.

KirstenBlest · 24/04/2021 19:37

Prefer James to Edward, but both are nice.

Not keen on Sienna or on Rose as a middle name.

DramaAlpaca · 24/04/2021 19:40

I love both name combinations. Nice choices.

ILoveStickers · 24/04/2021 20:45

The first names are nice.

As others have said, the middle names are the #1 middle names for each gender at the moment. They may be family names for you, or have a special meaning, but otherwise they are a bit generic.

partyatthepalace · 24/04/2021 21:24

Edwards’s great - Sienna is much less distinguished I think, and doesn’t really go - what about Serena or Susannah?

No problem re friend, you’ve warned her, and it’s too popular a name to be possessive about.

toastofthetown · 25/04/2021 10:28

Edward and Sienna are fine together, in the sense that they are both popular, well used names (both actually the same rank in popularity!). While they are different stylistically, in that Edward is a perennially popular classic and Sienna is more trendy, they don't clash, rhyme, and there are no terrible associations with the pair. Sibling names matching perfectly isn't the important. Not everyone who knows me knows (or cares) what my siblings' names are.

Edward is so popular that I wouldn't feel the need to disregard it if a friend used it. Friendships do change over the years too, so you might regret not using a name if 3 months after the baby is born your friend decides to move to Australia!

You didn't ask for advice, so just ignore this if you want, but the middle names you have chosen are so popular. I know two Edward Jameses and a Sienna Rose. That might not bother you, but alongside a popular first name, there's a real chance that you child could share their first name and middle name with a classmate.

Taylor19 · 25/04/2021 17:23

Thanks everyone for your comments.
I'm going to go for Edward and Sienna but will rethink the middle names, to be honest that has been a struggle to choose.
