Looking for an Indian baby name which sounds elegant/ sophisticated in British and Indian cultures, travels well and not too popular. I came across this name and think it’s quite nice, please give me your honest opinions!

If it’s spelled phonetically, it’s easy to pronounce which is a positive.

I’m not sure if it’s a boy or girl name just by reading it as I’ve never heard of this one before. That might be something to consider

I think also another consideration is that it would probably end up being shortened to Sonny at school

Congratulations on your baby! Choose a name you love regardless of opinions Flowers

@Ellasmummyx1 Thanks!! It’s a girls name and it is a phonetic spelling.

Kids tend to shorten names they find hard to pronounce- how would she feel if it got shortened to sonny? or sunny?

Souther · 19/04/2021 21:30

I like anoushka?
Sonakshi reminds me of Sonakshi Sinha. Not sure how you would feel about that.

OverByYer · 19/04/2021 21:33

It’s pretty

user1493494961 · 19/04/2021 21:44

It looks a bit clunky.

TeaCoffeeBiscuits · 19/04/2021 23:34

@Souther I don’t know much about her but just googled the name and found out that she’s a Bollywood actress, does she have a bad reputation or something?

Pretty. What would the diminutive be?

Lobelia76 · 20/04/2021 10:11

My Dd has a friend from India called Sanoska which I think is lovely. It doesn’t get shortened at all.

Flappityflippers1 · 20/04/2021 10:14

To be very honest - my first thought was “is it a Pokemon?”

I’ve no names to offer as the only Indian one I know and loved is “Deepak” (I’m not even sure I’ve spelt it right!), apparently it means light?

partyatthepalace · 20/04/2021 14:54

It’s OK.

I think Serena, Anjali and Anoushka are lovely.

No not a bad reputation. Just the first name that comes to mind.

Shes quite famous.

Cakepop9 · 20/04/2021 20:05

I think it’s beautiful and you could have the nicknames Soni, Sona, Sonny. I’d think about the spelling - if you want the long A sound (rather than a short A) then Sonaakshi might be better? It’s clearly a girl’s name so I don’t think you need to worry about that.

TeaCoffeeBiscuits · 22/04/2021 08:01

Thank you everyone! Going for a completely different name instead!

I actually thought it was Japanese.
I know you’re not using it now, but it’s really pretty.
