Flora - parents are probably lawyers
Tess - Tom boy
Artemis - parents are social climbers and/or wannabe intellectuals
Guy - trying to be posh
Hector - trying even harder to be posh
Torsten - hipster parents who say “gentle hands” while their child attacks yours

Hoppinggreen · 14/04/2021 09:28

But I DO actually like Flora, prefer Florence though or Phoebe

TheVanguardSix · 14/04/2021 09:40

Torsten- I would assume German parents who work in robotics engineering, the same field he will get into.

Hector- Salamanca.

Artemis and Flora- really good artists who will go onto the Slade School of Fine Art

Tess- Can muck out like nobody's business AND ace her A levels. She will be born wearing Blundstones.

Guy- Has rosy cheeks and is really into Rugby. His family's in Burke's Peerage. He will be an investment banker.

KirstenBlest · 14/04/2021 09:42

girls:

  • Flora - like a lot
  • Tess - like a lot
  • Artemis - No, too try hard(?), Artemis Fowl.

Boys:

  • Guy like a lot
  • Hector - not keen
  • Torsten - is it Scandinavian?

All suggest a normal middle class background, apart from the ones I questioned

RusholmeRuffian · 14/04/2021 09:45

Hector & Artemis- parents like Greek Mythology

FeistySheep · 14/04/2021 09:52

Flora - very common name here (Highlands) and lovely. Flora would be kind and gentle!
Tess - a feisty person, but unfortunately saddled with only one terrible nickname option - 'Tessie'
Artemis - the parents loved Greek(?) mythology or Artemis Fowl (Artemis was male in this book)

Guy - a total lad
Hector - wouldn't blink here (Highlands) - normal name, though admittedly mostly old people who have it
Torsten - pretentious (sorry!)

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 14/04/2021 09:57

girls:

  • Flora - a bit wet and feeble
  • Tess - zero impressions about this but prefer Tessa
  • Artemis - I’d assume boy and trying too hard to be unique

Boys:

  • Guy - knob but that’s probably because the one Guy I met was a knob
  • Hector - old man
  • Torsten - don’t know this name so wouldn’t have much of a first impression other than checking pronunciation
averythinline · 14/04/2021 10:00

Artemis -greek family origin All the ones I know of are ..
Flora-scots...really like it but am a fan of scots girls names..
Tess -neutral sort of name suits lots of different types but erring on the sparky side...although a number that are Tessa's and one that's really a natasha!
Hector-possibly Scots or into mythology but unless said with a burr a bit harsh...nicer names out there...
Guy-bit wet....not keen
Torsten-northern European/steel for some reason...like it...

BorisandHarriet · 14/04/2021 10:02

Flora and Tess are fine. I thought Artemis was a boys name.

Guy is ok.
Hector ok depending on where you live.
Torsten immediately makes me think of testicular torsion.

Howmanysleepsnow · 14/04/2021 10:08

Flora- hand knitted clothing, veggie
Tess- horsey, jolly hockey sticks
Artemis- quiet, well read
Guy- reasonably intelligent, hard working
Hector- from old money or a farmer/ crofter
Torsten- try hard, posh, not relatable.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 14/04/2021 10:12

girls:

  • Flora - posh and will be chair of PTA one day
  • Tess - of the D'urbervilles
  • Artemis - fowl - and a lot to explain for a kid

Boys:

  • Guy - the most normal, inoffensive
  • Hector - like all the nice old men names ran out so you went with this (same as Ralph, etc)
  • Torsten - it's ok, prefer Torben

I totally understand that it's hard to find an unusual name these days though.

Popetthetreehugger · 14/04/2021 10:14

Hoppinggreen 🤣🤣🤣 this is my daughter... as my grandson lays waste to his cousins

HerMammy · 14/04/2021 10:16

@Hoppinggreen
Torsten - hipster parents who say “gentle hands” while their child attacks yours
think we’ve all encountered a Torsten 🤣🤣

ArtemisiaGentle · 14/04/2021 10:17

From my UN you can see I like Artemisia (Gentileschi, a painter from the 17th century) so you get a vote from me.

Flora: quiet, but wants to make change to the world
Tess: horsey!
Guy: 1980s dude in a lambourghini
Hector: wears tweed and owns a castle in Scotland
Torsten: I immediately thought tungsten the metal. DH identified it as a name from Iceland meaning Thor's Stone. He's into ancient mythology.

Junebabe · 14/04/2021 10:21

Flora- Pretty intelligent
Tess- glittery girl
Artemis- Hippy parents

Guy- "Cool" parents who wear leather
Hector- Smart but quiet
Torsten- The naughty kid

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/04/2021 10:25

Hmm, interesting choices..
Tess is ok.
Flora is ok. Don’t particularly like either of them, but at least you are unlikely to condemn the child to a lifetime of teasing.
Artemis - just no. Talk about try hard and pretentious. And a boys name..

Guy is probably a twat.
Hector is definitely a twat.
Isn’t Torsten a piece of IKEA furniture..?

Sorry, op!

Inafastspin · 14/04/2021 10:29

Grin Loving some of these comments! If it helps, I wouldn't say we're hippy, posh or horsey, but "no pushing" is probably every second thing I find myself saying! Sigh, toddlers!

Torsten and Artemis don't seem to be that liked...both are probably the ones I am most unsure about too. I quite like fairly straightforward names, not overly popular and ideally with a certain quiet strength about them if you know what I mean. Flora and Tess seem a bit opposite in that to me, but I like them both. I'm not persuaded by any of our boy names Confused

SwedishK · 14/04/2021 10:29

I love Flora. I would assume it's an artistic person.

Torsten was common in Sweden in the 40's-50's. It's about as exciting as Stephen or Craig.

Inafastspin · 14/04/2021 10:30

IKEA furniture!! I can't unsee that now!

SwedishK · 14/04/2021 10:36

If you want a Scandi name which is a bit more popular these days then maybe Viggo? Or Arvid? Or just Tor?

Hufflepuffsunite · 14/04/2021 10:37

I like the name Flora! I've taught a couple and they were lovely so positive associations. I like Artemis too - I think it's pretty and I love mythology. Mn will hate it though! Tess seems a bit boring in comparison to the first two.

Guy - this is the male equivalent of Tess, surely? A bit bland! I definitely don't associate it with posh people at all, I'm surprised by pp who've said that. Hector makes me laugh- sorry! It makes me think of a rather funny episode of a TV show I watch. Torsten - I've taught a Torsten and never really liked the name. How about Tristan?

PattyPan · 14/04/2021 10:44

Flora - spoilt and girly
Tess - curly brown hair
Artemis - posh but arty
Guy - rugby player
Hector - posh and conservative
Torsten - German

PattyPan · 14/04/2021 10:50

Artemis - just no. Talk about try hard and pretentious. And a boys name.

I agree it’s try hard but how is Artemis a boy’s name? It’s the Greek goddess of the moon Confused

AuntieStella · 14/04/2021 10:54

Flora - margarine, parents didn't realise that a lively name is forever tainted by 'spreads easily'
Tess - more of a nickname, and agree it's horsey (or sheep living)
Artemis - lovely educated/arty?

Guy - lovely, possibly but not irredeemably posh
Hector - lovely, goes well with Artemis (inky older Pepe remember 'I'm a very unhappy Hector'
Torsten - not come across this one, and don't take to it

Estasala · 14/04/2021 11:06

Flora and Tess - beautiful, innocent milkmaid types with flowing hair
Artemis - boyish

Guy - suave and tall with floppy hair
Hector - old, florid, cross
Torsten - makes me think of torsion (twisted testicle)
