I would really appreciate your thoughts on your impressions and expectations of these names:

girls:

  • Flora

  • Artemis

Boys:

  • Guy
  • Hector
  • Torsten

Thanks! If there are any you think I would like based on these, feel free to suggest them!

I like Ludo but am possibly swayed by knowing a really cheeky and imaginative one already.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 14/04/2021 22:43

I know Guys and Hector and they have all been utter knobs. The ones called Guy are all a bit unwholesome too. Make me feel a bit ill. They have all been loaded though if that helps,
I like Torsten - sounds all strong and Germanic/ Scandi. I like Conrad and Karl’s too though so it’s just my own taste.

Flora is “nice”.
Tess is a nickname. I’m seeing her as a bit chunky especially in the boob department.
I thought Artemis was a boys name (I know an Art and I’d assumed it was that, shortened).

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 14/04/2021 22:51

I’ve met 3 children called Hector-it’s not a common name but because it is unusual it feels faddish.

I like Ludo and pp’s suggestion of Viggo - I love how this sounds.

I really like Tess.

TempsPerdu · 14/04/2021 23:12

Flora - a kind, ‘capable’ girl (I think of Flora Poste from Cold Comfort Farm) Intelligent and sensible - school prefect material. Musical. Strong principles. Possibly a little bit earnest.

Tess - tomboyish and outdoorsy. Cheerful and down to earth, with a rebellious streak. Very wholesome and healthy looking - wild curly hair, grazed knees and rosy cheeks.

Artemis - parents are academics, but she has her sights set on art college. Sensitive, quirky, a little intense. Siblings are called Cassian and Isolde.

Guy - posh background, privately educated but to his parents’ disappointment now works for a left-wing think tank. Permanently messy hair, distracted air. Means well but has a habit of putting his foot in it.

Hector - either toff rugger bugger with permanently popped collar or angry Scottish landowner.

Torsten - hipster parents live in Clapton or Stoke Newington and have never ventured anywhere near Scandinavia. Good natured but has no boundaries.

Like both Flora and Tess (but prefer the more grown up Tessa). Artemis is too ‘much’ for me, although I’d admire it on a book/TV character etc. Not keen on any of the boys’ names but do love Torin as a possible alternative to Torsten.

shittingthreeeyedraven · 14/04/2021 23:30

I love how scathing people are about names on here when they have no idea where they come from Hmm

Artemis is clearly a girls name from the Greek goddess of hunting and virginity.

Hector was a prince of Troy.

Perhaps a classical education is more unusual than I thought.

If it helps, I love both of these!

TatianaBis · 14/04/2021 23:39

My favourites by are Artemis and Hector.

MN is very conservative and class conscious - and they will be seen as posh. I immediately know I’d get on with their parents.

Love Thibault too. But the British will mangle the pronunciation so Tybalt (from R+J) would work better.

Also like Guy and Tess.

Flora is much less interesting and Torsten is ok if you’ve Scandi heritage Otherwise a bit random

FrankChurchillsHaircut · 14/04/2021 23:43

Parents saying "gentle hands" while their toddler attacks yours..oh yes..hated those.

FrankChurchillsHaircut · 14/04/2021 23:44

But as to the names quoted in op, I'd have no particular view.

TatianaBis · 14/04/2021 23:44

Good username all the same. 👍🏼

Maskedrevenger · 14/04/2021 23:59

Flora- parents only eat real butter
Tess - nickname popular when I was young 10 ton Tessie (named after a bomb)
Artemis- parent(s) have read a particular book
Guy- parents have a lack of imagination
Hector- should be Scottish and have red hair
Torsten- parents must be Scandinavian otherwise what’s the point.

TatianaBis · 15/04/2021 00:03

parent(s) have read a particular book

The ‘book’ of Greek mythology?

KurtWilde · 15/04/2021 00:08

None. I don't judge people's personalities or parentage by their name.

IaltagDhubh · 15/04/2021 00:32
  • Flora - wafty and slim, likes long skirts, long hair, and warm cardigans. Spends her time making pottery and dancing. Kind to everyone.
  • Tess - a friendly Labrador. Loves chasing a ball, and stealing food off the counter, but you can’t be angry with her when she looks at you with those big brown eyes and goofy doggy grin.
  • Artemis - wafty and artsy, like Flora, but will punch you in the face for being mean to her friend. People underestimate her, to their detriment.

Boys:

  • Guy - doesn’t really bring anything to mind. I’m not sure that’s a good thing...
  • Hector - looks magnificent in a kilt, can knock up a cabinet for you in no time (a proper wooden one, not an IKEA flat pack - he’ll do that in 20 minutes, but he’ll be silently judging your choices the whole time), he also plays piano to a grade 8 level, and swears frequently and imaginatively.
  • Torsten - tall, blonde, muscular, scandalous and Scandinavian. Likes to travel, and will strike up a conversation with anyone. Plays guitar very badly.
IaltagDhubh · 15/04/2021 00:42
  • Thibault - a bit skinny, likes playing rugby but isn’t very good at it. Went through a period of trying to get people to call him ‘Bolt’, but it never caught on and he gave up after a year or so. Likes computers, beer, and plaid shirts.
  • Ludovic - a bit reserved but lovely when you get to know him. Adores animals, works as a vet and keeps ferrets. Scared of horses but he never lets on. Has a Labrador named Tess, and always keeps a pair of slightly muddy green wellies by the back door.
IaltagDhubh · 15/04/2021 00:45

So in short, I think you should go for Artemis and Ludo, and Labrador called Tess.

Chilldonaldchill · 15/04/2021 07:28

I'm shocked how many people don't know Artemis is a Greek goddess.

BorisandHarriet · 15/04/2021 07:41

@Chilldonaldchill

I'm shocked how many people don't know Artemis is a Greek goddess.
I don’t think it’s always that people don’t know. Just the Artemis Fowl thing can make people picture a boy rather than a girl when they hear the name.
TatianaBis · 15/04/2021 08:57

Why would you picture a Greek goddess as a boy on the basis of a book?

moofolk · 15/04/2021 09:02

I normally cringe at name threads as it turns into a class battle with so many Mumsnetters living names I hate like Tabitha and Matilda but

I like Tess.

A lot.

It seems pretty no-messing and his that sweet spot of unusual but not weird.

And the old lady name thing but without being cutesy.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 15/04/2021 09:09

Perhaps a classical education is more unusual than I thought.

It’s not about where names come from but how they’re used. Helen may well have been all that back in Troy but now she’s a mum of three in Cambridge in middle management. Zeus is the Doberman , Hermes is a delivery company.

FelicityPike · 15/04/2021 09:15

I knew an old man called Torsten. Swedish.
The most old mannish old man I ever met.
So kind, gentle and sweet with the cheekiest, twinkliest eyes.
He was a gent.

PattyPan · 15/04/2021 09:27

I would assume an adult/teen Ludo was a player Wink
Thibault I think of either as more of a surname or the horrible cousin in Romeo and Juliet.
What about Christian, Tobias, Matthias?

TatianaBis · 15/04/2021 09:28

It’s both.

To many posters Aurora is Disney, to me she’s Roman goddess of the dawn and the northern lights. I’ve no interest in Disney and don’t give a toot what they call their princesses.

Zeus is king of the gods, Hermes the winged messenger. Zeus the restaurant and Hermes the courier and the fashion brand are named after the Gods.

cupoftea2021 · 15/04/2021 09:31

@Hoppinggreen

Flora - parents are probably lawyers Tess - Tom boy Artemis - parents are social climbers and/or wannabe intellectuals Guy - trying to be posh Hector - trying even harder to be posh Torsten - hipster parents who say “gentle hands” while their child attacks yours
Love it Gentle hands 😂
HarkAVagrant · 15/04/2021 09:36

I’m doing a without reading the thread, so as not to be influenced, so apologies if he conversation has moved on!
Flora - practical, domestic, Scottish, wearing gingham
Tess - shiny hair, sporty, popular, studying science or languages
Artemis - dark hair, quirky, has posters of dolphins and is into weird music
Guy - dark haired accountant or banker, quite status orientated, likes sports
Hector - responsible, serious, slightly overbearing big brother type
Torsten - Scandinavian, high flying, works in the media or is a lawyer
