Trendy popular or timeless popular?

Hi all,

My first DD is due in the summer and I'm finding names a challenge! I dont mind popular names at all but I'd rather not have a name that is really fashionable right now but will date terribly, not unlike my own name which dates me terribly! But the trouble is I dont have too many friends with young kids or work with children so I have no idea what names fall into what category. Please could people comment on the below list? Grin Or if they aren't popular at all that's great too!

Names we love are:

Thea (Front runner)
Anya
Sienna
Charlotte
Alice
Georgina
Alba

Thank you!

I know quite a few Charlotte Alice and Theas non of your other names. I would say Charlotte and Alice won’t date like say Tracey or Nicola does

Swearwolf · 12/04/2021 16:10

I'd say the only one that is more trendy is Sienna, I know quite a lot of little ones. The others I would say are more ageless - I went to school with kids called Charlotte, Alice, Georgina and Thea and they are still being used now. My favourite of your list by a long way is Thea.

KirstenBlest · 12/04/2021 16:14

Thea (Front runner) - blends in to the Theos and Mias. Faddy and not particularly nice. Some will say it as Fear.

Sienna - faddy, not keen
Alba - faddy, cheap late 20th C electrical goods, Alec Salmon
Anya - fine, Anna better

Classic:
Charlotte
Alice
Georgina

My favourite is Alice

SE13Mummy · 12/04/2021 16:14

I would say Alice, Charlotte and Georgina are the timeless ones from your list. Along with names such as Hannah, Elizabeth, Emma and Mary they are names that don't seem to point to a particular era.

Thea feels as though it's increasing in popularity, likewise Sienna as are names that were popular 100 years ago e.g. Edith, Ada, Betty.

SixDegrees · 12/04/2021 16:23

Timeless - Charlotte, Alice, Georgina

Trendy - Thea, Anya, Sienna, Alba

The Darkgreener website is a good one for checking out name popularity trends, it uses ONS data for England and Wales from 1996.

I'd say Charlotte and Alice are Timeless.
I wouldn't put Georgina in either category. It certainly isn't trendy, but I wouldn't say it was timeless either. I'd be shocked to meet a baby Georgina now. I've not came across that name for years.
Although its only recently starting to become popular. I think Thea will stand the test of time.

Im not sure about Anya and Alba.

Sienna is very trendy but also very pretty.

Other ideas for Timeless names.
Anna.
Amelia.
Lucy
Olivia
Elizabeth.

Standrewsschool · 12/04/2021 16:43

Alice, Charlotte and Georgina (or Georgia) are the more classic, timeless names.

Creepygnochi · 12/04/2021 16:52

Anya feels very try hard unless you're Eastern European. It's Anna. What's next? Tomorrow are we calling Alena, Aliona? Ella, Etusha? Julia, Yulia? and Elizabeth, Elizaveta?

MalagaNights · 12/04/2021 16:58

Thea - Current and faddy (I hate it)
Anya - Current and faddy (I hate it)
Sienna - Current and faddy (but I love it!!)
Charlotte - popular and timeless (I love it)
Alice - relatively popular definitely timeless (I love it)
Georgina - not popular but timeless (I love it, and Georgia)
Alba - not populat or timless ( I hate it)

londonscalling · 12/04/2021 17:00

All nice apart from Alba. It's the name of an electronics brand!

Ninkanink · 12/04/2021 17:01

I like Thea as a diminutive for Theodora.

Charlotte is timeless.

Not that keen on any of the others.

Whatshouldicallme · 12/04/2021 17:04

The only one on that list that seems super faddy to me is Sienna. 10 years ago I'd never even though of it as a name and suddenly they are everywhere. I imagine that will very much date a child to the current era.

The rest I think are fine. Charlotte and Alice are most classic I'd say.

TempsPerdu · 12/04/2021 17:53

I see Alice and Charlotte as genuinely classic and timeless, if a bit dull, Georgina as slightly dated, Sienna and Alba as faddy and a little downmarket, and Anya and Thea somewhere in the middle - not faddy but their sounds (short, ending in a, lots of vowels) are very ‘of the moment’.

My picks would be Alice or Anya.

Flymetothestars · 12/04/2021 18:18

Love Anya and Thea
Don't know any

Ejm02 · 12/04/2021 19:48

I think Charlotte and Alice are the most timeless names on your list. They will definitely not date!

ZenNudist · 12/04/2021 19:55

Thea will date her. Quite a popular faddy name.

Anya is unusual but still a recognised name so not classic but not faddy. Personally don't love it but that's just my opinion. Might fit your requirements best.

Sienna - very faddy. Will really date her.

Charlotte
Alice

Both classic and lovely. Likely to be popular but with good reason. Great names.

Georgina, guess this is a classic . Personally I hate it. Hopefully there won't be many others but you cant predict what will be popular.

Alba. Not a girls name. Name of a Taiwanese cheap CD player manufacturer. Possibly a surname. Awful. Sorry.

Ikeameatballs · 12/04/2021 19:58

NOT Alba! It’s the name of the new Scottish political party.

The rest are nice. Anya is probably my favourite and Sienna my least favourite.

nokia3210567 · 12/04/2021 20:01

I love Alice and Georgina x

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 12/04/2021 20:18

Thea (Front runner)- a lovely name, not faddy but not a classic either
Anya - reminds me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but that’s no bad thing Smile. Neither faddy nor very popular I would think.
Sienna - a bit ‘of a moment’. It’s a nice name but will date.
Charlotte - timeless classic. Not overused.
Alice - as Charlotte, perhaps a little too popular at the moment but won’t date
Georgina - same as Alice.
Alba - don’t know about popularity. It’s certainly striking but it seems a little out of kilter with your other choices.
Alternatives for timeless classics (in my opinion anyway) would be Helena, Eleanor, Imogen, Clara, Marianne, Jane, Beatrice, or Esther.

Dietcokeaddiction · 12/04/2021 20:32

Thea (Front runner) - I don't think this is very popular. It's having a little resurgence at the moment but I don't think it will date. It was nearly our choice 18 years ago and didn't feel dated then either. I still absolutely love it.
Anya - again not particularly popular and more timeless than trendy
Sienna - definitely not timeless, not particularly trendy or popular either, I confess I dislike it a lot but that might be because of the ones I know
Charlotte - timeless popular
Alice - timeless popular
Georgina - timeless but not particularly popular at the moment
Alba - trendy popular

DungeonKeeper · 12/04/2021 20:46

I really like Thea and Anya and I haven’t heard either of those in the playground.

I really don’t like Alba, it’s so clunky and ugly.

I would say Sienna is the most popular out of those choices, I can think of several Sienna’s, it’s a bit faddy.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 12/04/2021 21:28

Thea - trendy, but nice sound
Anya - neither classic nor trendy, international
Sienna - trendy, has a celeb feel
Charlotte - classic, fairly timeless
Alice - classic, very timeless
Georgina - classic enough (just not as timeless as Alice)
Alba - potentially trendy, just not that popular yet

My fave of your choices is Anya or Alice (or Charlotte if you don't care about popularity).

Sprockerdilerock · 13/04/2021 15:02

Thanks all!

Sienna and Alba are definite trendy names.

I don't agree with other posters about Thea. I think it's unusual yet classic. I went to uni with a Thea and she was interesting and great fun.

partyatthepalace · 18/04/2021 16:17

They are all v popular

I’d try and find a more classic name Thea could be short for eg Anthea, Dorothea, Theodora, so she has some options.
