Seen so many posts about this recently but does anyone actually have cousins / members of families with the same first name and different surname ?

Is there an issue

I think there are three cousins with the same first name and surname in DH's large Irish family, not in this generation though.

I think this was much more common in years gone by.

I remember when my grandad’s cousin died several people were surprised to see my grandad alive at the funeral. They had exactly the same names and so, having seen the death announcement, some of my grandad’s friends had thought he had died.

Must be confusing for the grandparents and other relatives. I couldn’t give my dc a name that my brothers and sisters had already used.

newnamesameold · 07/04/2021 20:39

I have the same first name as one of my first cousins - different surnames though.

Stevearnottsbeard · 07/04/2021 20:46

My son has the same first name as one of my cousins, completely different surnames and haven't seen my cousin in over 10 years. My son is nearly 16 and nobody even mentioned it back then

My dad's stepbrother gave his son the same first name as my brother but then my dad and his brother had the same first names as their two stepbrothers anyway so we're used to people in the family having the same names!!

Nogardenersworld · 07/04/2021 21:41

We have cousins with the same first and surname,
They just use different nicknames around family - think liz, Eliza and Beth

No problem to my knowledge!

My DM has a first cousin with same first name who I believe was named after her (but never shared a surname) . She is about 15 years younger than my DM.
When they were younger they were known as Big XXX and little XXX

I don't see why I have 3 cousins all called Joseph who are no more than 18 months apart all born to 3 sisters.
Named after our grandfather this thing of being the only one with a name has to be a recent thing because it was never a problem for us we all know exactly what Joe we mean when we're talking about them.
Including my grandad there's 4 first name Joes.
When including all middle names after him there is upto now there is 8 of us with Joe either as a first name, double barrelled first name or middle name.

I'm the double barrelled first name.

I have an Ann and an Anne.

In my family there is an uncle/nephew pairing with the exact same name - both called John Smith (not real name).

Never been any issues as far as I'm aware. The younger one was affectionately called 'Little John' growing up by the family to differentiate in conversation.

My cousin said they wanted to call their eldest son my name, but didn't out of respect to me. I said you should have asked I wouldn't have minded at all!

We're not close, would have made no difference to my life.

Synchrony · 09/04/2021 01:41

Yes, my cousin has the same name as me.
It's had zero impact on me. They live on the other side of the country and we have only met a handful of times in our whole life.

PurePeppermint · 09/04/2021 01:55

Yes, my cousins have the same name as each other - they're in their 40s now, born within a year of each other. I once asked my mum if anyone raised an eyebrow and she said no one was bothered by it.

stellarfox · 09/04/2021 06:31

Not intentionally but including cousins partners there are now 3 of one name and 2 of another!

TheChineseChicken · 09/04/2021 06:34

Not cousins but my son has the same first name as my cousin’s son. But I haven’t seen my cousin or her son for probably 20 years (she’s a lot older than me). It sounds weird written down but I decided that I liked the name too much to care! No one in the family has ever commented on it
