Hello 👋

I'm looking for a Welsh/French name that doesn't differ too much in pronunciation. Me and the DH like the name Rhys but feel it would have to be pronounced very differently in France than it would in Wales. Other names that we include Gael, Matthias and Elias.

Happy for short as well as longer names. Thank you for any suggestions.

Are you Welsh speakers? Asking because Elias an Matthias will sound differently.

Gael looks too much like Gail.

Yvan or Simon might work.

I'm a Welsh speaker, we both speak French.
For Mattias, do you feel that Matthias would be pronounced 'Matt-i-as' as opposed to 'Matt-ay-as'. Diolch!

In French Matthias is pronounced Mat-yas with a slight stress on the 2nd syllable

Matthias would be Matty-as in French and Math-ee-as in Welsh.

One option would be to pick a name that sounds the same in most European languages. Avoid th as it's th is Welsh but t in many languages. Avoid w, as it will be v in French.

Biblical names are probably a safe option. Something like Andreas or Matteo would work. Andreas is Welsh but Matteo isn't.

I'd probably go for Luc as it sounds pretty much the same in both.

Breton names are a very good suggestion! Celtic Brythonic language family but also French!
