What are your thoughts on Millicent, its a name I've always loved but disregarded when naming both dds but I just heard it on cbeebies and it reminded me my love for it.

I have a friend called Millicent, she's always called Milly though. Long before Milly was fashionable.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/03/2021 14:15

Too harsh and unfriendly sounding.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/03/2021 14:26

Useable and very cool imo. Useable because of the obvious popular nn's Milly/Mila if she dislikes it, cool because it will make most people think of Suffragist Fawcett. In fact with the current popularity of a lot of other retro/vintage names (Clara/Ivy/Ada/Nancy/Mabel/Florence etc), I can't figure out why Millicent isn't more popular - maybe because it has harsher consonant sounds which are less fashionable?

Violetlavenders · 30/03/2021 14:36

Millicent sounds like it means thousand hundred

GVmama · 30/03/2021 14:43

I love it, I remember years ago trying to get a friend to call her DD Millicent instead of Melissa (which was to be shortened to Milly). I didn’t win unfortunately, but still love it.

RedMarauder · 30/03/2021 16:10

I like it probably because a read a book when I was younger with that name in.

It sounds like one of the names that should come round again.

MammaMiaWallace · 30/03/2021 16:13

It’s sounds quite similar to Militant to me...

Quercus3 · 30/03/2021 16:38

I love Millicent, it's a great name

haggistramp · 30/03/2021 16:45

Makes me think of maleficent, and I like it even more.

Raahh · 30/03/2021 19:55

This is all a bit outing if anyone recognises me but-
It is my older daughter's name. She is 14. She has a love/hate relationship with itGrin

In her first week at secondary- it was mis-heard as Maleficent (something we had never considered)- and it stuck (at home, anyway- because she was being properly moody at the time Grin- it suited her).

I love it.

Her middle name is Elizabeth, which is interesting because that is the name of Millicent Fawcett's sister.

And I have a dd2 who is called Philippa.
Guess what Millicent F's daughter was called?

Grin
Raahh · 30/03/2021 19:56

(And I didn't plan the suffragist connection, by the way- the names were just ones I likedGrin).

partyatthepalace · 30/03/2021 23:11

Sweet but strong, and fits with other late Victorian fashionable names -the only thing that would put me off is she would end up being called Milly and it’s such a popular nn for all the Emily/Emilia/Amelia/Milas knocking around...

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 31/03/2021 03:26

Reminds me of centipedes.

A bit ugly imo.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 31/03/2021 03:28

Should say - ugly in a quite cool way.

Like Audrey or Dorothy, which I think are a bit ugly but really like.

Millicent could grow on me like they did

RedMarauder · 31/03/2021 05:24

Nothing wrong with Milly as a nickname.

HereComesATractor · 31/03/2021 05:53

I know 3 baby/toddler Millicents, all known as Milly. I like it, it suits them all

Lucent · 31/03/2021 06:24

Too frilly and elaborate-sounding for me.

VienneseWhirligig · 31/03/2021 06:28

If I had a baby girl tomorrow it would be a strong contender for a name.

AnyaMoondial · 31/03/2021 07:16

I love it.

HeronLanyon · 31/03/2021 07:20

I like Millicent.
I does remind me of malevolent/millipede/malfeasance. I suspect that all says something about me not the name Grin

It’s unusual for such an interesting name that the most obvious nickname is the very used Milly. You’d think there would be more somehow.

Violetlavenders · 31/03/2021 09:32

Milli = thousand
Cent = hundred

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/03/2021 09:37

I love an old lady name, but Millicent is a step too far for me (like Ethel, Dorcas etc).

Unless you're going to call her Millicent Margaret Amanda.

Troyhelena · 31/03/2021 20:39

So cool

NotATomato · 31/03/2021 21:46

I don’t like it, and Millie is a nickname is just dull, there are 100s of them.

IllNeverLetGoJack · 31/03/2021 23:09

I like it.

Only slight hesitation is that it might be a bit close to Maleficent. However, she is a good guy these days, and a rather cool namesake after Angelina Jolie played her. So maybe not a negative association at all.
