YOu cant predict a nickname, they evolve as they grow.

PlanetPuddle · 20/03/2021 11:13

A good nickname will just happen as the child gets older so I wouldn't choose a name just for the nickname.

Aurora - Rory - or could be rora or roar or might hate having their name shortened

And I'd say Alexander is a commonly used name.

Thanks for the help - I kind of mean like a birth name and a name that everyone calls them. For example I know a little girl called Reberta but everyone calls her Bertie . Any suggestions?!

Elizabeth
Loads of nicknames

PlanetPuddle · 20/03/2021 11:21

I like your Zeola suggestion on your other thread.

For girl
Emmylou - Emmy, Lou, Em

For boy
Nathaniel - Ned, Nathan.

I'd start by looking at long names and see which you like I think longer names are easier to get nicknames from.

I know two Dominics and they struggle to get anyone to call them anything apart from Dom. So some nicknames you will have to try hard if you want them to stick.

oohmyback · 20/03/2021 11:30

Josephine - jo or josie (or phina for my josie)
Frances/Francesca - Frankie
Robyn - Bobby
Margaret - Maggie, mags
Juliette - jules

All names can be turned into nicknames!

These evolve naturally and often bear little resemblance to the original name.

I know an Edward known as Bear.

Or a Sarah known as Pebbles.

Cornishmumofone · 20/03/2021 12:53

I know lots of Demelzas and none of them have ever been called Demi. The ones who shorten it tend to be Melz or Melza.

merryhouse · 20/03/2021 13:05

Diminutive, rather than nickname. Nickname is Longshanks, or Piggy, or Ginger, and nothing to do with their actual given name.

What do you mean by common? Widespread, or low-class? Because your list of diminutives includes one of each Grin

I think Minty is a bit twee.

Rebecca - Becky, or Rebec if you have musical pretensions
Victoria - Vicky or Tor
Tabitha - Tabby
Rosanna - Rosie
Octavia - Tavie
Millicent - Milly

Augustus - Gus
Frederick - Freddy, Fred
Maximilian - Max

To be awkward I only know one Demelza and she's a Demi.
