Not Mary Rose, that's a famous old boat.

LIamaDelRey · 16/03/2021 21:22

You can have whatever you want but I like Melody Rose

Warrickdaviesasplates · 16/03/2021 21:22

Melody Rose.

As PP said Mary Rose is a famous old boat and sauce.

I can't see Anna going as well as a middle name, but can't put my finger on why.

bourbonne · 16/03/2021 21:23

Why can't you have Mary Melody?

LIamaDelRey · 16/03/2021 21:23

oh i dunno, marie celeste as a sibling?! too matchy matchy?

Retrievemysanity · 16/03/2021 21:24

Melody Rose

daisypond · 16/03/2021 21:24

Mary is a fabulous name. Mary Anna is lovely. I’d avoid Rose because every other girl has Rose as a middle name, and the ship, of course. You could have Mary Melody. Why not?

Redrose8701 · 16/03/2021 21:24

Well I’ll be blowed! I’m 43 how did this ship sail by without me knowing!
Any suggestions welcomed x

I don't think the looney toons reference is that obvi tbh

BellaVida · 16/03/2021 21:28

Melody Marie?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/03/2021 21:29

Mary Anna is lovely - Mary is a classic, with lots of cool namesakes and nickname options that deserves to make a comeback (and Anna is elegant and very international). There is also the similar (Shakespearean) Mariana you could consider?

I'd say Mary Rose has a slightly prettier sound than Mary Anna, since it has a lovely flow, but the Mary Rose is a v.v. famous shipwreck if that matters? (it might not since middle names are rarely used).

Melody is not my taste - feels somehow a bit tacky, sorry (although I could be influenced by my dislike of the nn Mel, as I quite like similar Elodie).

daisypond · 16/03/2021 21:29

Oh, I see. I’ve never heard of Mary Melody. Is she that well known a cartoon character?

viques · 16/03/2021 21:29

I rather like Mary Anna, like Marianne or Marion but different. Mary is a lovely name, it was one of my mothers name, and I wish I had chosen it for my dd but with out surname it sounded wrong.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/03/2021 21:30

Cross post with your update!

bourbonne · 16/03/2021 21:33

Mary Anna Melody?

LIamaDelRey · 16/03/2021 21:48

Marianne is timeless

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/03/2021 21:52

I like Mary Rose, and it wouldn't bother me about the ship - lots of ships are named after women. It's not like you're planning to call her Boaty McBoatface.

Mary Anna is nice too.

FluffyPinkSocks · 16/03/2021 21:57

Not Melody, every time I hear the name I sing the theme tune from the CBeebies show in my head!

Mary Anna, I presume she’s only going to be called by her first name?

I have a Mary, Mary Therese. She’s 7.

MercyBodle · 17/03/2021 02:33

Mary Anna is my pick. Lovely!
I also like Melody, and while there's nothing wrong with Rose - and it sounds great with most names - it's a default middle name.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 17/03/2021 03:01

Melody is a very pretty name . Not keen on Mary .

Kokeshi123 · 17/03/2021 13:20

I like both (sorry, not helpful).

I think Melody needs a short, simple middle name, like Jane, June, Kate, Beth, Ruth etc. Mary needs something longer like Rosalind or Eleanor.

The problem with Mary Anna is that a lot of people who see both names together will think that it's some sort of double name and she'll spend her life saying "No, not Mary Anna. Just Mary. Anna is my middle name."

PotentialBeautyTherapist · 17/03/2021 13:29

I have an 8 year old Anna. Not many of them about (far more Hannahs)

Ann was traditionally often used as a middle name but not Anna. Rose (along with Grace) seem to be this generation's Louise/Jane in terms of being common middle names, I considered Rose for my daughter as I think it needs to be rescued from middle name-dom Smile

Mary is lovely, classic and underused.

Melody is pretty dreadful, sorry OP but I'd avoid that one. It sticks out like a sore thumb among your other classic and beautiful choices.

Did you never watch Blue Peter when you were a kid? I'm same age group and this was massive on there at the time. Must have been mid 80's? I really like Mary but Mary Anna doesn't flow too well and Mary Anne is at risk of blurring into one name. Mary Elizabeth Mary Niamh Mary Kate (too little house of the priarie?)
Bruce2 · 17/03/2021 14:56

Mary definitely over Melody

Mary Anna I'd go for.

Although I'd more likely pair with a longer middle name personally

Mary Elizabeth
Mary Vivien

That type of feel but Mary Anna of your choices

Serin · 17/03/2021 15:36

Love Mary.
You'd be brave to call her Mary Rose though Grin how about Mary Rosa? Or Mary Rosalind?.
Melody sounds very 70's to me.
