Misha or Mischa for a girl

I’m not pregnant yet we’re trying to conceive at the moment but it took us so long to decide on my DDs name last time I thought I’d get ahead 😁 ..boys names we both agree on girls we struggle!

Misha is the Russian name for Michael so usually a boys name but it’s been used as a girls name on the West too, sometimes with spelling Mischa like Mischa Barton. I love the name and we do have some Russian in the family..I suppose we could use it for a boy but I just think it sounds feminine despite being a boys name originally. Any opinions or similar alternatives welcomed!

I think it's a lovely name.

Misha

KirstenBlest · 16/03/2021 11:47

Boy's name

Scarby9 · 16/03/2021 11:50

The only Mischa I have known was a girl. I like it.

Ninkanink · 16/03/2021 11:51

Misha is a boy’s name.

Mischa is nice.

thriftyhen · 16/03/2021 11:53

I would assume a boy, as in Misha Glenny.

Ninkanink · 16/03/2021 11:54

Ahaha that’ll teach me only to read the title!! Wink

I’d go for Mischa - it’s pretty and I actually think the word looks better too.

Especially if you have Russian in the family, I personally would want to keep with heritage/history so I’d avoid the Misha spelling since it’s traditionally masculine.

@Jr9901 my daughter is called Mischa, I absolutely adore the name! We didn't name her for two weeks nearly!!! Went through a million names and then just heard Mischa and instantly knew it was the one, pronounced Meesha we always call her Misch now 😍😍😍😍

Statistically both Misha and similar Sasha are much more popular as given names for girls than boys in the UK (although obviously that doesn't mean there aren't more Michael's and Alexander's going by the nn's).

I'd stick with the Misha spelling - it's more popular/better known despite Barton.

Ninkanink · 16/03/2021 22:48

It’s still wrong though...

AuntieStella · 16/03/2021 22:56

I don't think it matters which spelling; both are boy's names to me

ILoveStickers · 17/03/2021 06:09

I know one male and one female Mischa, both in their 30s.

I know it will seem masculine to some, but it's fairly unisex to me. I like it.

partyatthepalace · 17/03/2021 19:28

It’s OK. The one I know is spelt Mischka

partyatthepalace · 17/03/2021 19:29

... and is female

babbaloushka · 20/03/2021 13:21

I love Mischa for a girl.
