Is Ffion a boys name?

So in my never ending quest to find the perfect boys name, I’ve noticed two different boys (on TV) called Ffion in the last day or so.

My question though is is it actually a boys name? I’ve only ever thought of it for girls, but I really like it. Or is it gender neutral?

I always believed it to be a girls name. I’ve only ever come across one and she was female.

Tantalust · 09/03/2021 15:19

Definitely a Welsh girl name, never heard it for a boy.

partyatthepalace · 09/03/2021 15:19

It’s definitely a Welsh girls name

But Fionn is an Irish boy’s name

Saisong · 09/03/2021 15:20

Are you sure they weren't Fionn, which is an Irish boys name.

Ffion is definately a Welsh girls name

Whatalottachocca · 09/03/2021 15:20

Apparently it means foxglove and is a girls name....I just googled it.

Squeakerfoot · 09/03/2021 15:21

Fionn is an Irish boys name.

Nell96 · 09/03/2021 15:53

Definitely a Welsh girl's name - I'd find it very odd on a boy.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/03/2021 18:49

Very feminine to me.

CabernetSoWhat · 09/03/2021 19:11

Ffion (pronounced Fee-on)- Welsh girl's name
Fionn (pronounced Finn)- Irish boy's name.

LizzieAnt · 09/03/2021 19:41

Fionn is also pronounced Fyun.

Thedogscollar · 09/03/2021 20:00

I know of a Ffion female welsh name. Never heard it used as a male name xx

CaffiSaliMali · 09/03/2021 20:55

Ffion is a Welsh girls name meaning foxglove.

There is an Irish boys name, Fionn, which looks similar but is pronounced differently.

OneKeyAtATime · 09/03/2021 20:57

Fion is French slang for anus so don't use it if you are planning on emigrating there!

Queenfreak · 09/03/2021 21:07

Our Fionn is a male builder, our Ffion is a female secretary.

ellenpartridge · 09/03/2021 21:35

Agree Ffion is a girl, Fionn a boy.

Anoisagusaris · 09/03/2021 21:39

Fionn isn’t pronounced Finn in Irish. It’s Fyun.

LizzieAnt · 09/03/2021 21:53

@Anoisagusaris
It depends on dialect. It's pronounced like Finn in Ulster afaik. Native speakers in Kerry tend to say Fyune. The Fionns I know are Fyun all right though.

jamthencreamyoufool · 10/03/2021 14:32

Fionn (pronounced Finn)- Irish boy's name

It's not pronounced Finn, that's a different name. Its more like Fee-yun if you say it fast

HummusAndCarrotSticks · 10/03/2021 14:52

As pps have said, you might be thinking of Fionn, which is not pronounced like Finn IME.

Kittykatmacbill · 10/03/2021 14:58

It’s an Irish male name, I have only met one, a burley site engineer. He obviously hated it and wanted people to use his middle name.

LizzieAnt · 10/03/2021 15:11

Fionn is pronounced differently depending on where in Ireland you live, and whether or not Irish is your first language (it isn't for most).

The link below is a guide to the pronunciation of the word, not the name, but they're pronounced the same. These are pronunciations of Fionn by native speakers of different dialects. The Fyun pronunciation (ie the Connacht version) is also the pronunciation that's widespread in Munster and Leinster among those who don't speak Irish as a first language - so most of the country. I"m not sure about Ulster, but I've a feeling the Finn pronunciation is fairly widespread there among English as well as Irish speakers. It certainly comes up on these threads a lot.

I'm not sure if this is the name you heard OP, but it's certainly a boys' name.

LizzieAnt · 10/03/2021 15:53

Just to add to the confusion Smile. I'd agree Fyun is now the most widespread way of saying the name Fionn in Ireland, but the other versions aren't wrong, just dialectal differences.

I was coming to say this. Don’t use it!
