Don't know whether no responses mean unobjectionable or horrendous HmmGrin

Love Adam.
Dislike Moritz- reminds me of a cheap tan or a cheap purse brand?
Ari- reminds me of cockney Harry.

Erin is nice.
Iris is overdone imo
The other two are not to my taste.

Ijustlikedthename · 07/03/2021 11:05

Ari, Erin and Adira are my favourites from your list

DingoWings · 07/03/2021 11:07

I really like Iris. Don't mind (but probably wouldn't use) Adam.
Erin is pretty normal but mainly used by those who wish to honour Irish ancestry which I don't have. I wouldn't consider any of the others, but mainly because they don't culturally fit who I am - but perhaps you're coming at this from something other than my white English background?

Violetlavenders · 07/03/2021 11:11

I like Moritz and Adira!

BrightonR · 07/03/2021 11:13

Do you have a German connection? There were lots of little Moritz when I lived there. I think it might be harder to pronounce in England. I like Adam the best out of your boys names.

I love Iris! If there is a German connection though I am not a fan of the Ear-is pronounciation. Jana is a lovely name but I think she will forever be spelling her name and correcting people.

Violetlavenders · 07/03/2021 11:15

Moritz is pronounced the same in English and German. I like it.

Iris is pronounced Eeris is German. Like Iridescent.

partyatthepalace · 07/03/2021 11:28

I like Ari - though I think people will mishear as Harry it it bothers you. How about Levi, or Eli as a nn for Elijah or Elisha?
Adam is fine
Moritz I don’t like

Are you partly German? How about Leopold nn Leo, or have a look at what other names cross over

Iris is lovely but very popular (it will be pronounced UK style whatever you do.)
Erin is Ok
Adira is Ok but I think will get constantly misspelled and mispronounced
Jana (pronounced Ya-nah) - it will be constantly mispronounced and misspelt

If you want a girls name that works in Germany and UK (?) there should be quite a lot - Anna, Alexandra, Claudia etc, but you will get it pronounced UK style

Whatsyourflava · 07/03/2021 11:32

It's always a bit quieter at the weekend @MyCalatheaHatesMe
More responses next week I bet

I love Adam

user1493494961 · 07/03/2021 11:38

Adam and Erin are nice, Iris is OK, dislike the others.

duckoutofwater · 07/03/2021 13:12

Erin is much more popular than Iris, 54th vs 81st in 2019 for England and Wales

KirstenBlest · 07/03/2021 13:42

Moritz - different
Adam - ok
Ari - no

Iris - fine but a bit old lady-ish
Erin - too popular, too nothingy and harsh sounding
Adira - no
Jana (pronounced Ya-nah) - ok but will get Jay-na in the uk

MyCalatheaHatesMe · 07/03/2021 14:25

Thank you, that's all really helpful. Those saying that Ari makes them think of Harry - it's pronounced Ah-Ree, so not like Harry with the H dropped.

OP posts:
NoWayHosier · 07/03/2021 14:28

I like Ari (reminds me of Entourage), Iris and Erin. Adam is fine. Jana doesn't do it for me, neither does Moritz, and Adira is a bit Mystic Meg.

DingoWings · 07/03/2021 14:30

@MyCalatheaHatesMe

Thank you, that's all really helpful. Those saying that Ari makes them think of Harry - it's pronounced Ah-Ree, so not like Harry with the H dropped.
But in England, if that's where you are, I think it will be pronounced 'arry, whatever you intend. It's quite a popular name amongst the Cypriot community in my area, short for Aristotle I assume.
Nell96 · 07/03/2021 15:13

Moritz - dislike
Adam - ok, bit dull
Ari - bit insubstantial, and will sound like 'Harry' with an accent

Iris - love
Erin - love (my dad's middle name)
Adira - quite like
Jana (pronounced Ya-nah) - dislike the sound

MyCalatheaHatesMe · 07/03/2021 16:21

Interesting that so many aren't keen on Ari, it's probably my frontrunner.

I don't think people possibly making a mistake when pronouncing it when reading it for the first time is an issue. It's easy enough to pronounce, so can be corrected.

Erin is the only one I like

May2021Mummy · 07/03/2021 16:33

I love Erin not sure about the boys probably Ari

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 07/03/2021 16:35

Moritz - terrible!
Adam - ok but I don’t love it
Ari - I would have said ‘Arry if I hadn’t seen your update with pronunciation. Don’t like either.

Iris - ok but sounds too old fashioned for me.
Erin - like this. I considered it for DD2 but don’t love it enough. SIL just named her DD Erin.
Adira - nope
Jana (pronounced Ya-nah) - would have said Jaina without your pronunciation and I would have preferred that.

From your list: Adam and Erin

MyCalatheaHatesMe · 07/03/2021 17:09

Just realised that Adira may also need explanation re pronunciation: It's Ah-dear-a (like Amira with a D). It mean strong, noble, powerful.

That’s how I would say it. Makes me think Madeira cake.
EdgeOfACoin · 07/03/2021 18:30

I like Adira and Ari - I'm a bit surprised at the negative reactions.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 07/03/2021 18:31

The more I’ve thought about it, Ari (your pronunciation) has grown on me.

BackforGood · 07/03/2021 19:16

It is quite an unusual list, to my mind.
You've gone from Moritz to Adam to Ari.

Personally, I've not heard of Moritz, but then Adam is a lovely (to my ears) international, common enough name. Then Ari has a definite ring of being from two or three particular cultures.
If you live in England, he will definitely be called 'arry' all the time, and you/ he will continually have people write it down as Harry. I knew a 14 yr old Ari and he really had this happen all day long.

What is your cultural background ?
Tell me more about Moritz as a name.

Girls, again, you've gone with a really mixed list
Iris - Very old fashioned, English name which has now come back round into fashion
Erin - an Irish heritage name
Adira - I would associate with an Indian background
Jana - German or Nordic sounding pronunciation

Usually on here people's lists tend to be similar "sorts" of names. Smile
