Esme

I really do think Esme is the best, most beautiful name for a girl. Unusual, but not too unusual.

Unfortunately my partner isn’t a fan!
Anyone able to suggest something similar? Thankyou! Also, as I’m hoping he might come round to the idea, please let me know which middle name you like best, or suggest others! Thank you :-)

Esme Rose
Esme Grace
Esme Lilly
Esme Reya
Esme Rey

I thought Esme was really popular, actually.

I don't mind it pronounced EZ-me, don't like EZ-may.

I'd choose Rose or Lily for a middle name.

Thanks, I love both pronunciations I think, is it the may one which is more known I wonder? If she was called Ez-me, would everyone think it was Ez-may?

Ez-me is the natural pronunciation, I think, and it's really beautiful. The first three middle names you posted are are so over-used and (possibly) tacky though - go for something that means something?

Flittingaboutagain · 26/02/2021 23:19

In terms of pronunciation I have heard the softer Es-me (rhymes with less me) Es-may (less May) and Ez-may (rhymes with Les as in Lesley).

In terms of spelling I much prefer Esme, regardless of whether you use the softer sound.

I also thought it was popular though.

Fair enough! Would you say Lilly is overused? I understand about Rose and Grace

I naturally think its Ez-may, not Ez-me and I don't know of any child in my world called the name. I like it, not too unusual, but not common.

I like! I prefer the Ez-may pronunciation. Have you got any family names you like for a middle name? I’m not a fan of super popular middle names -probably because l have one (literally everyone my age has it as a middle name!!)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/02/2021 23:21

I like Ezmay but Ezmee goes right through me, but. Not my circus not my monkeys.
Esme Grace is nice. I like Rey (Ray) but its too ryhmy with Esme.
Esme Savannah
Esme Willow
Esme Olivia
Esme Nicole
Esme Louise
Esme Rhiannon
Esme Sofia
Other suggestions.

I don’t like it and it’ll always be misspelled and mispronounced. It’s quite common, I thought. Rose, Lily and Grace are nice first names, but are overlooked as middle name. I much prefer all of them to Esme. I don’t like your other suggestions.

partyatthepalace · 26/02/2021 23:26

There are a lot of Esmes about. In the UK it seems to be more often
Es-mee than Es-may. Lily is super popular, and Rose and Grace must be the two most popular middle names - so if you do go ahead with Esme it might be an idea to think of a slightly less popular middle name -
Esme Jane, Esme Clara, Esme Florence

If you can't persuade your DP, other thoughts - Honor, Clara, Iris, Ivy, Emma, Rosa, Florence, Frances, Beatrice (Bea), Lara, Robin, Laurel, Margot, Zoe, Phoebe, Rowan, Lois

I have an Esmerelda, so she is at liberty to use Esme, Mel, Zelda etc. That's the solution:)

ethelredonagoodday · 26/02/2021 23:37

My daughter is in y6 and there are lots of esme/esmaes about on her cohort...

LouiseTrees · 26/02/2021 23:37

Alyssa - not particularly common name but it’s nice

SayHelloToMe · 26/02/2021 23:38

I love Esme as a name. I thought Es-may is the correct pronunciation due to origins of the name, so people naturally would read it out like this.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/02/2021 02:47

I really like the pretty but popular Esme, although I've personally only heard it pronounced "Ez- May"- the same as it would be in French (well, as close as we can get in UK accents). I also love the simple but classic May (which is quite uncommon now as a first name).

"Ez -mee" just sounds odd to me - if you like the strong "ee" sound at the end I'd suggest Greek names instead like Chloe, Zoe, Xanthe or Ianthe (apart from Chloe, they also have the benefit of being less popular than Esme).

For middle names I like Lily best of your choices. You could also consider Iris, Fern, Hope, Claire, Nell, Tess or Gwen if you like florals or single syllable middles.

Edenember · 27/02/2021 13:22

I really like it, it was top of the list for one of my babies if he’d been a girl. I think of it as a modern classic. I personally prefer the Scottish Esmie pronounciation, but the French is lovely too.

PuppyMonkey · 27/02/2021 13:27

Our Esme is Esme Bluebell.

We say it the Scottish way, Ez-me. Or probably more like Ez-mi really, emphasis on the Ezz.

Ez-may sounds like Dismay to me.

RuthW · 27/02/2021 13:34

Esme is popular now especially as some people now say Ezmay and not Ezmee as it should be.

pinkpinecone · 27/02/2021 13:41

I thought it was pronounced Es-may. It's a lovely name, I think Rose sounds best as a middle name.

pinkpinecone · 27/02/2021 13:42

I also think it's popular, I hear it a lot where I live.

janedoedeerafemaledeer · 27/02/2021 15:59

It reminds me of SMA and the word Smear.
