Kitty for DD?

AmyParker · 25/02/2021 19:49

Me and dh are due a baby girl in early june and we're discussing names. He suggested Kitty, which sounds cute but I thought it sounded quite childish and would not be the best when she's older. Do you agree or am i just being paranoid? Also he's not a fan of katie or Cat, which i suggested as alternatives.🙄😂
Thanks!

Our youngest is Kitty, full name Catriona. So she can use Kitty, or Cat or Triona, etc etc when she’s older. We know an adult who goes by Kit instead. I’d definitely give her a longer given name with Kitty as a “known by” or nickname

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 25/02/2021 19:58

Love Kitty, I think it suits all ages.

Kimye4eva · 25/02/2021 19:58

Not as a full name, no. Far too cutesy. At least go for a full name that she can use if she wants to.

WonkyCactus · 25/02/2021 19:59

I agree that Kitty is a cute nickname but would give her a full name on the birth certificate. The Kitty I know is officially Kathryn.

Twizbe · 25/02/2021 20:13

Kitty is short for Catherine usually.

We liked it but only as a nn. She would have been Catherine officially.

We decided against it only because our eldest's nickname is Puppy. It felt too contrived to have siblings known in the family as Puppy and Kitty

BikeRunSki · 25/02/2021 20:16

I had a great aunt Kitty, who would be about 120 if she were still alive. In her case, Kitty was a pet form of Kirsten.

Graffitiqueen · 25/02/2021 20:20

What about kizzy?

Bobbiepin · 25/02/2021 20:36

It's a baby's name and an old lady's name, not a middle aged professional and mum's name.

Muskox · 25/02/2021 20:37

The Kitty I know changed her name to Kat as a teen, when she decided Kitty was too childish.

BallsToYouSue · 25/02/2021 20:45

Kitty is usually short for Catherine, as has already been said. If he is set against Catherine or Catriona maybe on the birth certificate, you could maybe call her Kit? I can imagine a cool, older woman called Kit, but imagine her cringing if she had to introduce herself as Kitty! Cute on a child, but picture a 35yo hedge fund manager or something. Would you like to say, "hey, I'm Kitty" to someone interviewing you for a serious job? If yes, then go for it.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/02/2021 21:10

Very cute - I actually really like it, quite retro. But I'm not sure how happy I'd be as an adult introducing myself as Kitty - I guess it depends how confident your daughter is. Catherine, Katharina, Catriona, Katrina, Caitlin, Catrin, Christina, Christabel, even Claudia or Tabitha could all work for longer versions of Kitty (and would be safer options imo).

Inmypjsagain · 25/02/2021 21:14

I think it’s pretty, but this is a family friend’s daughter’s name and now she’s a teenager, some cruel school friends decided to call her Pussy as a joke. I wouldn’t have made that connection but teens are mean and she hates her name and wishes she was Katie.

Hoping that is an unusual case but just thought I’d flag it!

MadeOfStarStuff · 25/02/2021 21:17

Kitty is a cute nickname but silly and twee as a full name.

Arrierttyclock · 25/02/2021 21:55

I used to work with a girl called kitty and it always felt like a strange name tbh!

DramaAlpaca · 25/02/2021 21:56

I don't mind Kitty on a young child, but I'd have to put a longer, more dignified form on the birth certificate.

butnotthehippopotamus · 25/02/2021 22:03

My dd is Kitty (Katarina on birth certificate for options, but no one calls her that); she’s only 6 but loves her name and has really leaned into the cat thing! I’ve had some compliments, either saying it’s lovely or basically how it was a great-granny’s name and has nice connotations.

ZebraKid71 · 25/02/2021 22:29

I like it but agree with the majority of the above, it really needs a longer, not so cutesy version.

I know a Tabitha that goes by Kitty, she's about 16 now and it started as a family nickname but she very rarely gets called Tabitha at all.

partyatthepalace · 25/02/2021 22:56

It’s cute as a nn especially for a little girl, but yes you really want a form of Katharine on the birth certificate - or I suppose it could be a feminine of Christopher given Kit is in a nn for that. Take those two name stems together and that’s a lot of options! And you’ll be able to think of a few other plausible options - Tabitha, Verity etc

Lexilooo · 25/02/2021 23:00

Kitty is lovely but call her Kathryn, Kathleen, Caitlin, or something and give her options.

If you call her Katherine on her birth certificate but Kitty day to day, she has the option to be Kate/Katy/Kathy/Kath/Kat/Kit as well if she prefers.

Ilovemycat13 · 25/02/2021 23:13

I knew a lovely old lady called Kitty, and it suited her beautifully. I think it’s nice

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 26/02/2021 04:48

My Tabitha is nicknamed Kitty! It's a well-known nickname for Tabitha but there's always one Mumsnet poster who always gets furious whenever anyone says this and insists Kitty can't be used as a name unless as a nickname for Katherine, so be warned, she'll be along soon 😂

Sendingasurprise · 26/02/2021 05:38

I know a Kitty who had to endure many shouts of 'Hello Kitty" in the corridors at school. It was more common in that era (not sure if Hello Kitty is still around as,a brand now?).. and just a few idiot boys. But do be mindful ......give your daughter a escape route should she encounter this and be bothered by it.

I can see that ... but I always think of Tabitha Twitchitt who was a cat so the nn Kitty works
Drunkenmonkey · 26/02/2021 08:26

I would use a longer name. My biggest fear would be Pussy jokes as a teen. I think Katarina is gorgeous.

VenusClapTrap · 26/02/2021 09:40

I love it. I know a teenage Kitty; it really suits her. She is very beautiful and very cool. She has a sister called Tabitha, interestingly.
