Emma or Rosa?

Finally narrowed our list to two options, would love some opinions.

  • DH is set on Emma but I’m worried it’s a bit boring (less popular in Uk now but it’s no. 1 name across US and Europe)
  • I love Rosa, but DH worried it’s a little pretentious.

Any thoughts?
Thanks!

They're both excellent names. I'd say Emma is classic rather than boring but more likely to find there's another in her class.

KirstenBlest · 23/02/2021 10:14

Both nice but I prefer Emma.

Whatsyourflava · 23/02/2021 10:36

Emma
I don't find it boring

nextweek · 23/02/2021 10:37

I really like both names, I don't think Rosa is pretentious at all. I'd probably go for Emma as I've always liked it.

Chunkymenrock · 23/02/2021 10:42

Emma is the dullest of the dull to me. Rosa is pretty and different and really elegant.

raskolnikova · 23/02/2021 10:46

Rosa

Ploughingthrough · 23/02/2021 10:52

I absolutely adore the name Rosa. Had it lined up for DC2 but he was a boy! I'd pick Rosa, but Emma is also a nice classic name.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 23/02/2021 11:01

Until I came on MN baby name boards, to me, I didn't like Emma at all. It always seemed very dated and very dull. But I've started to like it because I am easily influenced and everyone on here always goes on about how classic it is! I can't find anyone OFF the MN baby names board who agrees that Emma is classic though, the genetal consensus seems to be my previous opinion - that it's really dull and a bit late 80's/early 90's.

To me, while I have begun to LIKE Emma, and think of it as 'pretty', I LOVE Rosa and think of it as strong, classy, international and beautiful. Both names are simple but to me Rosa has a dignity that Emma lacks, and will never seem dated. Wonderful namesakes too. Rosa 100% for me!

ErrolTheDragon · 23/02/2021 11:03

Of course Emma is classic, it's the name of one of Jane Austen's books!Grin

Whatsyourflava · 23/02/2021 11:09

@SmeleanorSmellstrop haha how funny. We're influencers on here.
I have always loved Emma though. The Jane Austin books are part of the logic I expect

itsme189 · 23/02/2021 12:31

Both nice, Rosa would be my preference and I wouldn't have thought it was pretentious at all!

user124724643 · 23/02/2021 12:38

Emma Rose would be ideal but Rose is so overused as a MN it has become cliche.

bootlebum · 23/02/2021 12:43

Both lovely but Emma gets my vote. It's my favourite name!

partyatthepalace · 23/02/2021 13:05

Both nice, but Emma much more of a classic so won’t date, so I’d go with that. Richer history also.

DramaAlpaca · 23/02/2021 13:19

Yes, Emma is a true classic with a history going back to the Middle Ages. It's my favourite name.

I like Rosa too, though I prefer the simplicity of Rose.

rooarsome · 23/02/2021 14:08

Emma is a beautiful name, very elegant and classic. I also like Rosa, but Emma has the edge

CaffiSaliMali · 23/02/2021 14:57

Both nice classic names but I prefer Rosa.

I don't think Rosa is pretentious at all, my mother used to work with one about 15 years ago and I remember thinking what a lovely name it was and it's been on my list ever since. It's just a different form of the classic Rose in the way Jacob is another form of the classic James.

Firebird83 · 23/02/2021 15:36

Rosa is lovely

HollysBush · 23/02/2021 15:40

I know you didn’t ask this, but how about Ember? Heard it the other day and thought it was lovely.

Daisy829 · 23/02/2021 15:42

I love Emma. I wanted that for my DD but we compromised on Emily.

BallsToYouSue · 23/02/2021 16:11

Emma

TeaTimeReader · 23/02/2021 16:15

LOVE ROSA!

I’ve not had girls but if I had one it was my first choice after Rosa the beautiful from Isabelle Allende’a House of the Spirits

Chilldonaldchill · 23/02/2021 17:04

Pretentious?! Rosa is great - strong, international and feminine. I think of Rosa Diaz on Brooklyn99.
I slightly prefer Emma though - classic and smart.
But they are both great.

BallsToYouSue · 23/02/2021 17:21

Although I far prefer Emma, that is not because Rosa is "pretentious"! It is not. I just don't like it and I love Emma.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/02/2021 18:32

Both are nice - but Emma is such a classic with a long history that it would be my choice. If it had been Rose rather than Rosa I would have struggled more (I do love the more classic sounding, romantic Rose).
