Tell me your thoughts on Margaret

So I am just off the phone with my grandma, who is in a care home and I obviously have been unable to see for a long time. Her dementia has really advanced and it was heartbreaking to have to natter away nonsense to fill the silence (she struggles to speak).

Anyway, I'm 13 weeks pregnant and we don't know the sex yet. I came off the phone and felt it would be perfect to call a girl 'Margaret' nn 'Maggie' after my granny. I'm not sure she'll get to meet them (we live a few hours away and obviously no one knows what restrictions will be like later in the year) and it would at least be a small way to remember her everyday.

So... what do you think? I had always thought it was an old lady name - EVERY old lady seems to be called Margaret - yet I'm suddenly overcome by this feeling. Do you know many little Margarets? Is it going to spike in popularity or do you think it will remain niche?

I prefer Maggie to Margaret, but do know of a little girl called Margaret which gets shortened to Peg/Peggy which is sweet!

I really like Margaret it has a classy feel about it. I also love Maggie

Margaret is a family name for us too and I've been considering whether we are bold enough to use it. It does definitely have an old lady vibe for me -- but hoping by the time DD is old enough maybe it will be back in a bit more use for children! Glad to see it getting some positive feedback on here at least.

Daisy has been used as s nickname for Margaret though. Fair enough if someone hasn't heard if it but that doesn't make it not so.

I actually really like it, I think it's going to be in the next lot of rediscovered names, as the Ava, Eva, Lily, Evelyn, May names are winding down. Basically it's the next lot of grandparent age people to be passing on.

I think the Thatcher connection is quite weak now, luckily, and definitely won't be there for her classmates. And I love both Maggie and Peggy as nicknames.

Slight dip in in the last couple of years but steadily rising since about 2002. Has the advantage of being pretty rare, currently 396th most popular, but everyone knows how to say it and spell it!

absolutely love love love it. It was on my list for my daughter but couldn't quite get it over the line with my husband. I just think it's gorgeous though.

It’s one of DD’s middle names but I didn’t love it enough for a first name. Partly because we had an animal called Meggie at the time and I thought it would be a bit odd to have a Maggie child and a Meggie cat

I love it. Lots of nicknames for Margaret. I nearly used it for a middle name for DD2 after my grandma, but DH didn't want to. I wish I'd fought harder for it now that she is gone, she would have been thrilled.

Margaret defo not. Too old fashioned - but Maggie is lovely xx

My first thought was "Thatcher" but obviously your child's generation won't really reference that.

I have one, she's 10.
I dithered about whether to commit to the full Margaret and I must admit she doesn't like it when supply teachers actually call her that because it's what's on the register - however I am glad I stuck to my guns and I think she secretly is too and will be more so as she grows up. She's Maggie to everyone really but sometimes gets Peggy or Daisy too.
I absolutely love it, along with all the diminutives; I think it's a name with real character.

I love it. My friend’s sister is a Margaret, nn Margot. Such a good name.

Funnily enough we had an incident not so long ago in the garden when she was about to lunge off something to certain death, I instinctively shouted 'Maggie Maggie Maggie!!!' and honestly without missing a beat, back came the cry from our 70-something neighbour:'Out out out!'

We must have been university students about the same time.

Lots of frumpy Margarets when I was at school. It was old-fashioned even then. I think they excelled at shorthand-typing, married early and settled for a life of Findus Crispy Pancakes served on the dot of 5.30pm. Or became Prime Minister.
