Due a baby girl in 4 weeks and we have narrowed it down to 2 first names and two middle names. The middle names are both family names.

Which do you prefer? Which first name goes best with which middle name?

First names:

Darcy
Aeryn

Middle names:
Eleanor
Jean

I don't think it's Irish, if that's what you mean by Gaelic. Erin already comes from an Irish word; Eireann. I'm not clear on all the rules of Irish, but I don't think Aeryn is an Irish word. Happy to be corrected by an Irish speaker though! It may be Scottish Gaelic. I wouldn't have the first clue about that.

BallsToYouSue · 18/02/2021 16:03

In fact, I don't think the letter y exists in Irish. Again, happy to be corrected by an Irish speaker.

jobbyjg · 18/02/2021 16:06

Darcy Jean is a very beautiful name. My friends daughters middle name is jean and I tho it's lovely

KirstenBlest · 18/02/2021 16:24

I'd go for Eleanor Jean.

Aeron doesn't sound like Aaron, it's oe like Eyron.
Aeryn isn't welsh, and if it were, it would be a boy's name, aer is air (as in fresh air), so it would be a strange name.

Aeryn made me think of Aerin Lauder.

Darcy will be mixed up with Darcie and Darcey.

BallsToYouSue · 18/02/2021 16:25

There is this; Aerin, which this site says is a Hebrew name meaning Ireland peace. But I do take info on baby name sites with a pinch of salt!

www.thenamemeaning.com/aerin/

They say it's pronounced like Erin, but another site says more like Ay-rin. I don't think it's a word in Irish, but FWIW, it would also be pronounced Ay-rin in Irish, I think (glad to be corrected by Irish speaker).

BallsToYouSue · 18/02/2021 16:29

Aeryn made me think of Aerin Lauder.

X post!

Enough4me · 18/02/2021 16:31

I like Eleanor (Ellie) Jean too.

toomuchlikemyusername · 18/02/2021 16:34

I would go for Eleanor Jean but I know that's not very helpful.

KirstenBlest · 18/02/2021 16:34

It's pretty isn't it Balls, softer sounding than Erin.

How about Sherrin or Merryn?

BallsToYouSue · 18/02/2021 16:40

Oooooooh I LOVE Merryn! Great suggestion.

LizzieAnt · 18/02/2021 21:18

Thanks for people's comments re Aeryn.
From what I can tell, it's a Gaelic name - and a Gaelic variant of Erin.

As BallsToYouSue said, there's no letter 'y' in the Irish alphabet (nor in Scottish Gaelic I believe). Aeryn could be considered an anglicised spelling of the Irish words Éireann or Éirinn, but it's not an Irish Gaelic word itself. Erin is also an anglicised spelling.

LizzieAnt · 18/02/2021 21:45

Just to clarify further, Éireann and Éirinn are grammatical forms of Éire, the Irish language name for Ireland. They're not used as names for people, though the name Éire is said to derive from Éiru, a goddess.
I still think of Erin as an Irish-American name, or as one used by the Irish diaspora, but I believe it's becoming more popular within Ireland now too. I personally have never met an Erin (or Aeryn) though and I'm Irish, living in Ireland.

LizzieAnt · 18/02/2021 21:51

Just to add, I pronounce Erin as Air-in.

jemimafuddleduck · 18/02/2021 21:53

Ok... fine, I'm wrong Hmm

I like the name Aeryn. I'm not really worried about whether it is Irish, I was just trying to make the point that it's not a name I've simply made up, nor is it the same as Erin!

KirstenBlest · 18/02/2021 22:07

Erin is probably more popular than you think. No 54 I think last year but on the rise.

LizzieAnt · 18/02/2021 22:12

I'd say lots of people (in Ireland and America at least) do pronounce Erin as you do Aeryn OP (as Air-in/Ay-rin). This may not be a problem for you where you are though? I have heard some people say Eh-rin for Erin in the UK so that would cut down on any confusion.
Congratulations and best of luck in any case Smile

HeronLanyon · 18/02/2021 22:21

Really not fond of Darcy. Seems faddish and naff. But who cares what I think eh ?

A (my iPhone won’t even accept your spelling!) far better than darcy.
I like Eleanor and Jean. Neither really go with A but who cares. Vanishingly rare for anyone to say the names out loud together I real life despite hours and hours and hours doing so before they are chosen/baby bornGrin
Congrats op .

ladygindiva · 18/02/2021 22:22

I like Darcy Eleanor
I LOVE Darcy Aeryn

ladygindiva · 18/02/2021 22:24

Darcy Jean is great too

Joolsin · 18/02/2021 22:34

Darcy Jean - lovely combination.

lilsquish · 18/02/2021 22:37

Aeryn to me is pronounced Ay-ren

Erin is Eh-rin

Completely different.

LizzieAnt · 18/02/2021 23:30

Erin would have originally been pronounced Ay-rin though lilsquish, and still is in many places including Ireland. Though its pronunciation has obviously changed in some areas that won't be the case everywhere. Just in case that makes a difference to the OP.

jemimafuddleduck · 19/02/2021 16:41

I think it's going to be Darcy Jean.

I love Aeryn but the more I think about it, the more I think it'll just end up pronounced "Erin" and I don't like that - plus Erin is even more popular than Darcy.

My wild card name is Emerald....

Have honestly never heard it pronounced differently here in Ireland or anywhere else!
