Due a baby girl in 4 weeks and we have narrowed it down to 2 first names and two middle names. The middle names are both family names.

Which do you prefer? Which first name goes best with which middle name?

First names:

Darcy
Aeryn

Middle names:
Eleanor
Jean

Darcy Jean

Don't inflict Aeryn on her, the poor kid will go through her entire life correcting people's spelling and pronunciation. Until she decides to abandon the name altogether.

Darcy Jean

felulageller · 15/02/2021 09:34

Aeryn and Erin sound completely different in my accent!

Enidblyton1 · 15/02/2021 09:45

Are the middle names after relations of yours OP? If they are, I’d have them both.

Aeryn Eleanor doesn’t flow together particularly, but does it matter? I never say my DCs first and middle names together.

What about Aeryn Jean Eleanor Surname?

I’m not a fan of Darcy at all, but that’s just personal taste.

Teakind · 15/02/2021 19:22

Darcy Jean sounds lovely

Chickenwing · 15/02/2021 19:30

I like Eleanor but none of the rest.

Serin · 15/02/2021 19:33

Aeryn Jean

jemimafuddleduck · 15/02/2021 19:35

Thanks all, I genuinely appreciate the input.

I don't like the spelling Erin - FWIW I haven't made up Aeryn, it is a recognised name and variant spelling of Erin. I just much prefer both the look and the sound of it to Erin.

It needs to be Eleanor or Jean for the middle name - not both.

I think from looking at the responses, Darcy Jean appears to be the most popular.

Aeryn Just makes me think of Aryan race

Spied · 15/02/2021 19:49

Darcy Jean.

Had Erin been an option I'd have chosen that.

jambeforeclottedcream · 15/02/2021 19:50

Darcey Jean

Although Darcey Eleanor is also nice

JackieWeaverhastheauthority · 15/02/2021 19:53

I know a female Aeron, named for the Welsh river, pronounced Air-ren.

OhCaptain · 15/02/2021 19:54

Elinor Jean is nice!

Aeryn is awkward to me but Darcy is a bit WAG-ish! Sorry. 😬

SE13Mummy · 15/02/2021 19:55

Darcy Eleanor, without a doubt. Eleanor balances out the short first name and Darcy is less likely to be mispronounced than Aeryn.

Heh1991 · 18/02/2021 02:19

I know of a baby also called Darcy Jean- think it’s a lovely combination xx

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 18/02/2021 02:30

Darcy Eleanor is lovely

@jemimafuddleduck I just wanted to hop on as I've noticed the comments about the spelling of Aeryn. The spelling of my name is extremely obscure, basically none of the letters make any sense with how it's pronounced. It's a traditional Scottish name, but I was born and grew up in England, and it's extremely rare that I come across someone that knows how it's pronounced. I get all sorts of strange attempts, and a lot of the time people just say 'Mrs' and use my surname rather than give it a go.

This has honestly never bothered me. I like having an unusual name. Yes it's a slight annoyance when first meeting someone, but that's over within seconds once I've explained to them how to pronounce it. Aeryn is much more straight forward than my name and does actually look like how it's pronounced to me :)

Just wanted to give my personal experience of 32 years with a tricky name, which has been absolutely fine as far as I'm concerned x

BallsToYouSue · 18/02/2021 09:46

I don't mind obscure spellings when they are the traditional ones, but this is a variation on an established name, which is Erin. Which itself is a fairly modern name! So it is a bit of an unusual choice to amend the spelling to make it trickier. If you're a Mhairi or Eilidh, that's different as those spellings make perfect sense in Gaelic. I speak a teensy bit of irish, so I see a name like Aoife and I know how to pronounce it immediately. Aeryn is not traditional to any language I don't think. Someone did mention Aeron, a Welsh river, which I think would be nicer as there is a meaning to it. Maybe a bit close to Aaron though.

Aeryn is like me saying I'm calling my dd Elizabeth, but spelling it Aileezabeth. Doesn't make sense.
Whereas if I said I was naming her Saoirse, because it is an irish name that makes sense.

All that said, she would get used to it and so would anyone else. People might question why, but probably only for a second before they get used to it.

MintGreenLife · 18/02/2021 10:02

A quick google suggests the name is in fact Gaelic: www.bounty.com/pregnancy-and-birth/baby-names/baby-name-search/a/aeryn

jemimafuddleduck · 18/02/2021 10:14

Thanks for people's comments re Aeryn.

From what I can tell, it's a Gaelic name - and a Gaelic variant of Erin. It's not a name I have made up.

People seem to think I want the name Erin and want to be "different" maybe? That's not the case... to me, Aeryn and Erin are different names. They look and are pronounced differently, albeit their origins are the same.

@jemimafuddleduck I agree with you, I think Aeryn is lovely, and as the link I posted above confirms, you of course have not made it up!

jemimafuddleduck · 18/02/2021 10:17

@MintGreenLife Thank you!

I love your middle names so much that I would go for Eleanor Jean but I know thats not a runner.

OhCaptain · 18/02/2021 15:59

@jemimafuddleduck how are you pronouncing it? If I saw it in my class I’d pronounce it Erin I must say!
