Is Maeve cool or old fashioned?

What do you think of the name Maeve?

DH and I are really struggling for a name for DD2. This is the only one where we both went that's nice.

I'm just worried it's a bit old fashioned?

@SandrasAnnoyingFriend

It's the main character's name in Sex Education and she is pretty cool, so I'm sure it's on the up
Sex Education was my first thought too. Then also Maeve Binchy the Irish novelist.

Love it! Prefer the Maeve spelling just for ease of pronunciation.

Soontobe60 · 14/02/2021 17:00

I love it! I know one Maeve in my school - shes really sweet and her parents are Very cool!

partyatthepalace · 14/02/2021 17:05

I would definitely spell it Maeve if you aren’t in Ireland, anything else will be a total pain for her -

MyNameisMaeve · 14/02/2021 19:14

Name changed for this in case it isn't obvious. Honestly Meabh would be such a pain in the arse for a child unless you live in Ireland, don't do it to her!! It's hard enough to get people to pronounce and spell Maeve properly.

Bolandsbiccies · 14/02/2021 19:28

If people can learn to say Tchaikovsky and Michelangelo and Dostoyevsky, they can learn to say Meabh.
I like the Meadhbh spelling myself! Bit old fashioned in Ireland but not at all in the UK.

FourOnTheHill · 14/02/2021 19:29

No one has mentioned Maeve in Sex Education. She’s very cool

FourOnTheHill · 14/02/2021 19:31

Oh sorry Sex Ed has been mentioned. Watch it if you are thinking of using the name. Also watch it because it’s good TV and Eric is lovely

Terriblecreature · 14/02/2021 19:36

I think it's a lovely name. Yes it's old fashioned but it's a cool old fashioned name. I think both spellings are nice too but I can understand your point on the Irish spelling being confusing of u r not Irish or aware of Irish names x

OMG I can't tell DH this spelling exists. He'll definitely want to use it!

You could go with the Old Irish Medb...

elizabethdraper · 14/02/2021 20:15

every other child in ireland is called maeve/ meadbh at the moment

MeMeMeYou · 14/02/2021 21:04

I quite like it. I have met a child Maeve and she was quiet and sweet so I associate it with her

Ladybird69 · 14/02/2021 21:24

So old fashioned that it’s cool. Love it ❤️

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 14/02/2021 21:28

I love it. I really fancied it for DD but DH was having none of it.

ThatDoesntBelongInAIBU · 14/02/2021 23:00

Oh no, the name has been ruined for me reading this. I couldn’t use a name that’s in some naff disgusting tv show. It was my favourite girls name :(

That was what put us off using it last year in the end
UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 15/02/2021 11:29

Maeve is definitely cool

AubergineDream · 15/02/2021 11:34

YummyBelicious · 15/02/2021 12:09

I prefer Maeva, but Meave is very nice also.

TulipsDaffodils · 15/02/2021 13:52

I like it

ftmum94 · 15/02/2021 23:06

I love Maeve!! Would love to use it myself but sounds awful with our surname

PandaBabyJuly · 15/02/2021 23:13

This is on my list for my dd2 in June! I love seeing everyone's opinions and spellings Grin

mamah2019 · 15/02/2021 23:24

Love it!

JollyGreenGiantess · 16/02/2021 07:58

@Timpeall

When you google queen Maeve a character from a series called The Boys comes up. I can't imagine the real Queen Maeve would be too impressed with that. She'd start some war in retaliation.
