Is Maeve cool or old fashioned?

What do you think of the name Maeve?

DH and I are really struggling for a name for DD2. This is the only one where we both went that's nice.

I'm just worried it's a bit old fashioned?

I love it!

Edenember · 13/02/2021 20:54

It’s one of the rare ones that’s both. It’s not old fashioned in a twee vintagey way, but rather in an Arthurian legend way. I must admit it’s a bit soft to my ear, but it would only take meeting one cool Maeve to change that impression. I think it’s a really versatile name you can make your own, it’s underused but not weird, I’d go for it 😊

Timpeall · 13/02/2021 20:54

When you google queen Maeve a character from a series called The Boys comes up. I can't imagine the real Queen Maeve would be too impressed with that. She'd start some war in retaliation.

Timpeall · 13/02/2021 20:57

It's funny when unfashionable Irish names are discovered outside of Ireland and become cool.

MumofSpud · 13/02/2021 21:02

I think it is both cool AND old-fashioned !!

HeronLanyon · 13/02/2021 21:03

I think it is both.

AuntieStella · 13/02/2021 21:03

Maeve is cool because it rhymes with Dave, and she will have a brother called Kevin,

JemimaTiggywinkle · 13/02/2021 21:04

I love it, was top of my list but I’m having a boy.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 13/02/2021 21:06

I like it, I know of just one, I also know a Maeva which is apparently popular.

EL8888 · 13/02/2021 21:19

Both l think

majesticallyawkward · 13/02/2021 21:19

It's gaining popularity because of sex education, maeve is a cool character but for me any child with that name I'd assume was named after the character. Better than all the game of thrones names kids have been saddled with.

Not that a tv related name is bad, my ds name is a nod to a classic sci-fi show. Not many people make the connection as is 20+ years old but those who do I know are cool.

danascully96 · 13/02/2021 22:01

The meaning is badass and, in my circles, tres chic 😎 I think Maeve might have been jarring a few years ago, but it’s since entered current naming trends.

Firebird83 · 14/02/2021 00:38

I know a toddler Maeve. It’s definitely increasing in popularity.

QueenOfPain · 14/02/2021 00:46

It’s cool.

Ellada19 · 14/02/2021 01:17

Yes it is cool and old fashioned, like a stylish vintage jacket.

DefinitelyMaybeBaby · 14/02/2021 08:17

I agree it's both. I love it. But it is massively on the up in the charts if that is important to you. It's still relatively unusual but it had a huge surge in the last couple of years (as others have said likely due to Sex Education on Netflix) and if it carried on rising on that trajectory it could be very popular in a couple of years.

I think currently it has vintage coolness which is expected, but it could be the next "Elsie", "Florence", "Ada" etc

DefinitelyMaybeBaby · 14/02/2021 08:18

*meant to say it's unexpected not expected

Peppaspig · 14/02/2021 08:54

To me its too much like Dave

mathanxiety · 14/02/2021 08:59

@Timpeall - Grin isn't it though. Orla is about to make a global breakthrough, and I think Maeve is going to surpass Ava everywhere.

BallsToYouSue · 14/02/2021 09:03

Cool! I like it. I knew one my age (30s). A university friend of a friend in Dublin. Although, she may have been Meabh.

RuthW · 14/02/2021 09:59

It's not old fashioned at all. It's up to date and quite popular

skukuza · 14/02/2021 10:01

Thanks all. Really helpful responses. I agree it might be gaining in popularity. But DD1 has a top 10 name so I don't really have a leg to stand on in that respect!

Now DH and I just need to agree on spelling. I want Maeve, he wants Meabh. But I really think his spelling will be confusing given that we don't live in Ireland and are unlikely to ever live there.

Looking at this graph Maeve had been in somewhat steady use, rising gradually until last year where it rose from ranked 507 with 84 babies in 2018 to ranked 218 with 225 baby Maeves. It’s one of those names which I’ve seen mentioned frequently and well liked on baby name forums for a while.

Destinyknown · 14/02/2021 10:05

Sorry but it's awful and so ugly sounding.
I just think of Dave.

FelicityStrongArrow · 14/02/2021 16:37

Mae + Dave.
The ve is a fleeting buzz sound that is almost imperceptible.
