Girls name help please! Due in 4 weeks

munchymoo · 12/02/2021 21:37

Due in 4 weeks and not got a name yet! Have a boy's name all sorted but for girls we're really struggling! I wouldn't normally include personal details but I have to here for the sake of the name question.... our surname is Head which isn't the easiest. Can I ask for people's HONEST opinions on these choices please?

  • Rose (would name her Rosaline but call her Rose day to day)
  • Orla (All Ahead?!)
  • Anya (can this also be pronounced On-ya in which case can't use, On yer Head?!)
  • Anaya/Anaia (both pronounced the same eg AnnAYah)... are these overly popular right now?)
  • Anais (is this pronounced "Annay" or "Annay-iss")?
  • Florence (Flo Head????)
  • Isla (no surname issues and is a beautiful name but isn't this massively popular right now and she'd be one of 3 Islas in her class?)
  • Evelyn
  • Amelie (not a fan of Amelia but like Amelie)

Any thoughts, opinions, suggestions please? x

I’m laughing bc we thought of Orla, but last name is Shaw, so would have sounded like a sailor 😂.
I personally love Rose, Isla and Evelyn (Eve/Evie for NN). Florence is a lovely name too, and don’t think that Head would be too much issue, unless there is something I’m not seeing?
Anaya - would be too confusing fir me, wrong pronunciations and spellings all the time and would drive me personally, insane.

babynamelover · 12/02/2021 21:58

I adore Orla. I also think Florence, Roseline & Evelyn are lovely.
Too be honest you don't use first and last together much.

CoffeeRunner · 12/02/2021 22:02

Good god not Orla or Anya. That would be child cruelty!

Is there anything longer you like?

Eg

Rebecca
Philippa
Elizabeth
Charlotte
Sophia
Isabella
Suzanna

Nah only everyday all the time at school!
angelaEhen · 12/02/2021 22:07

Rose and Florence are my favourite girls names ever

Wouldn't rose head sound a bit weird,
Florence Head sounds lovely, if I had a girl I was going to call her Florence Elizabeth

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 12/02/2021 22:39

Rose - my fave of your choices, very elegant and classic (Rosaline is nice and Shakespearean but I prefer the simple Rose personally)
Orla - okay but not my taste personally
Anya- 2nd fave, pretty, fun and exotic. Generally pronounced Ann -ya in E & W but can be pronounced On- ya elsewhere

Anaya/Anaia - bit trendy sounding for me
Anais - usually pronounced as An - ay -ees I think, but will likely get mangled so I wouldn't use it myself (unless you have French heritage?)
Florence - fine, quite popular but a nice name
Isla - too trendy and too overused for me
Evelyn - similar to Florence, popular but pleasant
Amelie - nice enough, prefer similar Rosalie or Coralie

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 12/02/2021 23:19

Oh, I missed your surname is Head (got distracted). In that case Anya, Isla, Orla and Florence (Flo/Flossie) won't work well. Rose Head also sounds a bit off to me -I think a popular 3 syllable name like Evelyn works best with Head, Amelie would also be okay.

Whatsyourflava · 12/02/2021 23:35

Love Anya and Isla

Firebird83 · 12/02/2021 23:55

I like Rosaline Head best.

“Evil in head” if pronounced that way.
HideTanner · 13/02/2021 00:35

You need a three syllable name I think.

Anya Head would be cruel. Rose Head sounds silly.

Evelyn or Amelie it is.

HideTanner · 13/02/2021 00:36

Oh yeah, not 'Evil in Head'

Gah, what a troublesome surname.

Amelie Head.

HideTanner · 13/02/2021 00:38

Maybe a four syllable name like Antonia. (inspired by Anthony Head there)

partyatthepalace · 13/02/2021 00:59

I agree with PP you really need a longer first name. Amelie works, or adapting your choices below, what about Annabel, Eliza/Elizabeth, Isabel, Emily or Rosanna (more likely to be actually used than Rosaline).

Of your list, other than Amelie, Florence works pretty well because it’s quite a drawn out pronunciation for two syllables (like Charlotte).

Rose Head is silly (dead heading roses), Orla, Isla, Anya/variations and Anais also sound daft with Head (sorry). Evelyn is Ok but quite hard sounding.

Quercus3 · 13/02/2021 06:45

Oh wow, I'd never think of Head as a tricky surname but it is quite troublesome isn't it!

Adore Rosaline and Rose, I do think Rose Head sounds a bit abrupt, but might be fine with Rosaline as a full name. I think Evelyn sounds great too.

Was going to suggest Eliza but that could sound like 'here lies a'... I do like Elizabeth though and lots of the possible nicknames sound good with your surname (Lizzie, Libby, Betty, Beth)

How about...
Freya
Phoebe
Juliet
Arabella
Georgia
Lyla
Penelope
Clara
Iris
Isabella

kat0107 · 13/02/2021 07:53

Rose - very pretty, although I might lean towards a two syllable name with your surname, but I still think it sounds nice
Orla - lovely name, but I can hear ‘all ahead’ a bit now too!
Anya - also nice, although I prefer some of your others
Anaya/Anaia - less keen compared to some of the others, but don’t dislike
Anais - I had to look up how to pronounce this, which would probably put me off with a name - but sounds nice if you won’t be annoyed when that happens (as I suspect it will!)
Florence - lovely, classic name, I only know one baby Flo at the moment
Evelyn - lovely name and goes really well with Head. I would also use Evie as a NN, but the full Evelyn is great too - my joint fave
Amelie - my other joint favourite, and works well with Head. I also know a baby recently called Coralie, and like that too

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 13/02/2021 08:03

Anya and Amelie are both love names and work really well with Head as a surname.

Morten · 13/02/2021 08:36

Definitely need a longer name and preferably one ending in a consonant.

Saying that I think Olivia Head is lovely. Or Juliet.

CaffiSaliMali · 13/02/2021 08:42

Anya is my favourite on your list but I'm not sure how well it goes with your surname. Anna or Annie might work? Avoid Annabel!

I would avoid Anya, Orla, Anaïs and Anaya. The first two due to your surname, Anaïs and Anaya due to the pronunciation issue.

Florence, Evelyn, Isla and Amelie are all nice names.

I think Rose is lovely. How is Rosaline pronounced? Rosa-leen or line to rhyme with wine? Lovely either way.

Chilldonaldchill · 13/02/2021 09:58
  • Rose (would name her Rosaline but call her Rose day to day) - love this. Would you pronounce it to rhyme with Caroline or with an -een sound at the end?
  • Orla (All Ahead?!) - I'm afraid I don't think it goes with the surname
  • Anya (can this also be pronounced On-ya in which case can't use, On yer Head?!) - I say it An-ya which I think is fine but maybe best not to?
  • Anaya/Anaia (both pronounced the same eg AnnAYah)... are these overly popular right now?) - I would pronounce both an-EYE-uh before being told so that might get annoying. Pretty name though and find with surname.
  • Anais (is this pronounced "Annay" or "Annay-iss")? - I think it's pronounced the second way? It's ok.
  • Florence (Flo Head????) - I like this and I think it works ok with the surname. Longer names sounds a bit better I think so maybe don't shorten it?
  • Isla (no surname issues and is a beautiful name but isn't this massively popular right now and she'd be one of 3 Islas in her class?) - lovely but popular
  • Evelyn - ok but very very popular. Also do you say Eve or Ever at the start?
  • Amelie (not a fan of Amelia but like Amelie) - I love Amelie and it goes really well with the surname.

I would pick Amelie or Florence but I would potentially pick Rosaline if you were going to use the full name.

catlike1979 · 13/02/2021 15:16

I really love Rose, I think if you called her Rosaline then that works well with the surname and Rose is fine for day to day use.

Isla is very overpopular but still a beautiful name.
I actually really like Anaya!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/02/2021 17:15

I've just almost went to suggest Holly. Blush You couldn't call her Holly Head ,could you. It'd be nearly as bad as Holly Wood.Grin.
Emilia Head
Sophia Head
Daisy Head
Georgia Head
Rachel Head

Passiveobserver · 13/02/2021 17:27

Abigail/ Abbie Head...Sounds nice to me 🙂

Out of your suggestions I like Amelie

Chicchicchicchiclana · 13/02/2021 17:31

There are lots of baby Evelyns at the moment.

I love the name Anya so I would go for that, despite your surname.

I like Rose too but Rosa even better.
