Are we crazy to name DD this?

Ok - I'm ready for the onslaught here...

But I loveeee the name Ithaca. Our surname is very common, one syllable.

Thoughts?

I’m a bit confused by this post without any context. Is there a special story behind it? We’re you or your hubby born in Ithaca?

I’m not really a fan of city names as names so whether it’s Ithaca, Dallas, Huston, Brooklyn... I’m just not into it.
Also, it just doesn’t have a nice sound. I keep hearing “I-thi-ca, is thicka’” in a voice like Biggie’s.

Just remembered today that my son has a city name. There are so many place names, I wouldn’t worry about it. Florence, Adelaide, Sienna, Rio etc. Admittedly Ithaca is a bit more out there. I don’t understand the ‘Jessica with a lisp’ comments... that would surely be ‘Jethica’, the I in Ithaca sounds very different to a ‘Je’...?

A great piece of advice given to me when we were discussing names was to imagine your child at 3, 7 13 and 15 with that name. Imagine them playing with their friends and the friends shouting them to kick at goal etc. If in your mind it sounds great then fine, if you can't imagine a bunch of 7 yr olds shouting it or you put on a posh or different accent when you say it (think hyacinth bucket) then maybe not.

Sounds pretty and I like the association with Greek mythology. It's a yes from me.

First thought was "university of" as in the university from the firm Road Trip.

Ishkah (or Iscah) is an Old Testament name which I like, although I am never sure of the spelling as it seems to differ depending on where it's written. It's pretty though, and similar, and a real name.

Ssying that, I think Ithaca sounds pretty and I wouldn't really think twice if I heard it as a girl's name.

Either of the above are a bit close to ''I suck her'' which, when older would perhaps get mis-pronounced a bit bit more. Kids can be cruel.

How would it be eye-scack-her? Wheres the S? You don’t say, ohh Jessica could be teased for being ‘Je! Sack her!’ Or ‘ye suck her’ 😄 what....?!

Nice Greek Island but would sound weird with a ‘common’ British surname.

I know an Isika which I always thought was a lovely name. Not too sure about ithaca though, I think it's the th sound in it
