But I loveeee the name Ithaca. Our surname is very common, one syllable.

Thoughts?

I love it OP. I don't think you should worry about what a bunch of random people on MN say though; in reality if anyone hates your baby's name they are not going to tell you to your face and your child isn't going to be held back by their unusual name. I grew up in the 80s with an unusual name and still managed to turn out OK and as a functioning member of society. My children have unusual names and no one has ever expressed a dislike of these - and to be honest with you, if they did then I wouldn't care! You've got to be a special kind of petty to dislike someone because of their name. If you like it then that is all that matters.

Most young children and quite a few adults cannot pronounce 'th', so she'll be 'Iffy-ka'.

It does sound pretty, but I'd be terribly afraid that it would end up being pronounced like IFF-i-kuh, which is dreadful. You could use it as a middle name, I think that would be beautiful.

If your surname is only one syllable, it sounds to me like Indiana Jones or similar.

On the other side you could have done the deed in Pratts Bottom, Blubberhouses, Nasty, Dorking, Dull or Mold.

I think you have to think whether your daughter in adult life, career etc wants the name of a Greek Island and American City. Personally I always think names of where the child was conceived are very tacky.

It's a bit brave for me. I understand in theory it should be similar to Lydia or Alexandria (both similar ancient cities) but the reality is that it isn't well known as a name and so may be unfair on your child. How about the similar Ilyria? (it's an invented place name from Shakespeare used occasionally as a girls name).

I normally like puth there names but livingbin the south east it will be 'iffyca'. Its the same with heather which us hevva and theo which is feo. All nice names even with the f sound but iffy is a bit iffy to me.

I think people will assume you and your family have a lisp I’m afraid.
