Ok - I'm ready for the onslaught here...

But I loveeee the name Ithaca. Our surname is very common, one syllable.

Thoughts?

It sounds very much like Agatha - why not choose a name that has a history?

Blackdog19 · 11/02/2021 15:27

I quite like it!

Sausagedog1 · 11/02/2021 15:27

I really like it! I would just think 'oh that's unusual but very nice' and never give it another thought.
If you like it use it!

Overdoor · 11/02/2021 15:32

@spookycookies

There are so many beautiful names out there. Why chose a word that isn't a name. IT's NOT A NAME
Well, it's as much a name as Paris or Brooklyn and the like.

Admittedly, I hate placename names, and Ithaca is where Cornell (Ivy League university) is to me, and an averagely joyless US college town with a loooong, grim winter.

121hugsneeded · 11/02/2021 15:32

Ok - covering a long shot here - but what if your child has a lisp ? Will people think she's called Jessica ?

ladycarlotta · 11/02/2021 15:32

I like the sentiment and association with the Odyssey - Ithaca is the home Odysseus is trying to return to - but I'd personally choose it for a middle name not a first name. It's quite a thing to have to carry.

WonkyCactus · 11/02/2021 15:34

Is that common one syllable surname Smith? If so I wouldn't choose Ithaca.
If not, you might get away with it.

Beamur · 11/02/2021 15:35

It's a very pretty island.
But it is difficult to say with a lisp. An abbreviation to Iffy wouldn't be great either.
I want to like it, but think it has a few drawbacks.

BlibBlabBlob · 11/02/2021 15:40

@WonkyCactus Ithaca Smithica Grin

@Amelia786 I would assume that your daughter was conceived in Ithaca with that name. And I personally think that naming your kid after the place you shagged in to create them is bleurgh.

Also, she will spend a lifetime having to explain her name to people and spelling it out over the phone EVERY.SINGLE.TIME.

If you want my honest opinion, it's a no.

notalwaysalondoner · 11/02/2021 15:42

It’s a bit out there but very pretty sounds.

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/02/2021 15:44

As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.

Hope your road is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you enter harbors you’re seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and go on learning from their scholars.

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.

Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you wouldn't have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.

And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you’ll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.

PattyPan · 11/02/2021 15:46

Is it where she was conceived? Confused I’ve never heard it as a name before, only a place and I think there are much nicer Greek or mythological names out there. Penelope? Even Iona after the Ionian Sea has a nicer sound.

strawberriesontheNeva · 11/02/2021 15:46

It's a bit ridiculous but each to their own....

Wolfiefan · 11/02/2021 15:49

Really don’t like it. But then I hate place names used for people.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 11/02/2021 15:50

Depends where you live too. In some accents it will sound like I-thick-a

All in all, it's not a name I'd saddle a child with, no.

Wellthatwassilly · 11/02/2021 15:50

People choosing silly names for their kids need to remember the kids will grow up into teens/adults

Dont be so selfish

LittleGwyneth · 11/02/2021 15:50

I really like it

Suzi888 · 11/02/2021 15:53

Not a fan in names that can be ‘messed’ with.... Thicko

halcyondays · 11/02/2021 15:55

No, I would hate to go through life introducing myself with this name. It just doesn’t sound nice as a person’s name.

LemonBreeland · 11/02/2021 15:56

Mumsnet doesn't like unusual names. So you won't get much love for it here. I really like it though.

caringcarer · 11/02/2021 15:56

Sounds like person saying it has a lisp.

Dogsarehairy · 11/02/2021 15:57

Was it the place of conception?

intheenddoesitreallymatter · 11/02/2021 15:58

It’s not really up my street, it took me four or five attempts to pronounce it properly it just looks really hard to read. She’ll spend a lifetime explaining her name and if you have a quite common surname - Smith, Lee, Brown, Green etc it sounds really try hard.

What about Iona or something similar? Or another Greek sounding name.

YouWontBelieveYourEyes · 11/02/2021 15:59

It will be pronounced with a FF instead of a Th. One of my children does this and it’s too late for me to change a name!

PolarnOPirate · 11/02/2021 15:59

I really like the sound of it but other people’s reactions would put me off. It’s the name of one of my favourite poems! I think it’s vowel heavy which is v in at the mo. I like but wouldn’t use.
