Emerging trends in London (or anywhere else!)

Firstly, not meaning to exclude folks outside the capital, it just seems that London tends to have some of its own trends. If you’d seen big trends where you are, I’d be interested in them too!

What names do you think are on the up and coming trends?

I saw on another thread that Stella is gaining popularity.

I’ve met quiet a lot of Arlo/ Jago/ Hugo and Margot’s so I think ‘O’ names are very popular right now.

Also lots of vintage beauts too - I’ve heard of 2 wilfreds and a Peggy born in 2021.

North Londoner here. A few emerging micro-trends I’ve noticed:

1940s/Old Hollywood names for girls: Audrey, Alma, Betty, Peggy, June, Vera, Sylvia

Straightforward mid-century/Enid Blyton names for boys: Peter, Robin, Laurence/Laurie, Christopher, Stanley, Leonard/Lenny

Slightly left field mythological names: Odin, Orion, Perseus. Isolde, Merlin, Gaia

Still very much outnumbered though by the granny/granddad chic names (Elsie, Mabel, Violet, Arthur, Alfred), Old Testament boys (Noah, Isaac, Ezra, Gabriel) and mainstream popular choices (Isla, Olivia, Amelia, Oliver, Harry)

There is a new baby boy in my close named Edgar .

We’re in East London and have seen a few trends....

The majority of baby and toddler boys seem to be called Leo, Otis, Ezra, Teddy and Felix. And then some of the classics have come in - I’ve met 3 under 1s called Thomas in the past 6 months.

Other trends include boys names for girls and not the typical ones....I’ve met girls called Finlay and Elliot.

And then lots of nature/animal names like Wolf, Fox, Finch, Tulip and Juniper

KirstenBlest · 05/02/2021 17:30

Tom will be more popular this year because of Captain Sir Tom.

KerennotKaren · 05/02/2021 17:51

My teenage DS is a John...everyone thought we were just boring when we named him. As unfashionable and outside of the in-crowd, as ever. Oh well.

WhatWouldZenoDo · 05/02/2021 20:43

@Linny88 yes, i can imagine Alma, Rita, Vera being more popular

I like the names that trendy privileged people are choosing in Dublin. Isolde, Aifric, Fiadh

Cressie2 · 05/02/2021 20:44

Thea, Ezra, Arlo, Alfie, Isabella- all really popular in London at the moment.

WhatWouldZenoDo · 05/02/2021 20:45

I mean, the normal names are still more popular but im so bored of them

Lostinspace23 · 05/02/2021 20:51

Seem to hear about a lot of Mabelsat the moment. When I had DD (3 years ago) Teddy and Dylan were both really popular - personally knew four of each all born within 3 months of each other.

AbstractHeart · 05/02/2021 20:56

I'm still seeing the "short names beginning with A" trend continuing - Ada, Ava, Aria, Arlo, Alfie, Albie, Azra, etc etc

WhatWouldZenoDo · 05/02/2021 20:56

Victor is a boys name i can see coming back. Has the same feel as Rita, Alma, Vera

2020Peepshow · 06/02/2021 10:36

Babies from London so far: Skye, May, 2 Ivy, Peggy.

I think the vintage charm is on full bloom and parents are getting ahead of the curve to pick Peggy that I’ve seen earlier in the thread as a not-there-yet name that will IMO become very popular.

Feels like Hazel is a solid trend as well, so is Nora and Lucia.

More interested in girls names if you’ve noticed :)

EdgeOfACoin · 06/02/2021 13:24

But Peggy is an awful name! It makes me think of Miss Piggy and clothes pegs and Peggy Mitchell.

It's okay as a nn for Margaret, but is Margaret back in fashion yet?

Changeythenamey · 06/02/2021 14:39

Margaret is a brilliant name but I’m afraid, for me (northerner born in the eighties) it is still too linked to the Iron Lady.

That’s interesting about Peggy - I wanted it for a girl when I was last pregnant in 2019 (we had a boy), but the reactions I got were so negative...mainly about Peggy Mitchell

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 06/02/2021 16:15

Stanley and Wilfred

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 07/02/2021 10:27

Kit
So many Kits, I know of 6 born in my area of east London within the past 6 months.

IcedLimes · 07/02/2021 11:30

On another thread they said names like Agnes, Mabel, Enid, Maude are very cool in North London. They probably are too cool to be emerging names in North London but would be emerging where I am outside London!

IcedLimes · 07/02/2021 11:37

I love Betty, June and Joan. They seem really cool. Someone on Gogglebox has a Bessie which is nice.
