Luke C... Does it work?

Luke has been a name I have loved for a long time, because it's classic, can't be shorted and it wears well from baby to teen to grown man imo. OH likes it too which is a big win however our surname beings C (think Colton) and we discounted it because I felt like it rolled together and ended up sounding like his name was Lou. We toyed with Lucas for full name nn Luc but Im less keen on Lucas and don't think that it will fully overcome my concern anyway as he will still introduce himself as nn surname, if that's what he goes by, not full name, surname. We have considered other names but I haven't found any I connect to as much and OH thinks I'm overthinking the issue anyway. So.. What are your thoughts? Can you be called Luke Colton or does it sound too much like Lou Colton and just have bad flow?

I know 2 Luke C's and this has never occurred to me. It's fine. Use it.

Firebird83 · 30/01/2021 12:56

I think it’s fine!

CoodleMoodle · 30/01/2021 12:58

Hi OP!

We have a Luke C... as well! And surname is kind of similar to Colton too, oddly.

He does have a middle name but that's obviously not used very much. I don't think it runs together at all. If he's ever referred to as Luke C... (at the GP or whatever) then I've never noticed it.

Best of luck, and congrats!

PolarnOPirate · 30/01/2021 13:00

We have similar issues, and once it was pointed out I couldn’t get past it! But I think people wouldn’t notice or think anything of it.

Our issue is with an H surname so eg Max becomes Mack, Lucas becomes Luca.

MrsL2016 · 30/01/2021 13:01

My maiden name begins with a C and I have a K towards the end of my first name. I did sometimes think the K and the C clashed a bit when saying them together but it was never a big issue. I do feel my married name flows better though.

NannyR · 30/01/2021 13:04

The two c sounds in the middle make it sound almost like Luca Colton. Lucas Colton sounds great.

bourbonne · 30/01/2021 13:06

It might sound like Luke Holton as well. It's a little awkward. But not worth ditching the name for, imo. I agree with you that Lucas is not a solution (and not as nice).

calmearth · 30/01/2021 13:10

Completely over thinking it. It's really not an issue I would even consider. Luke is nice.

How many adult people do you call by their full name? I never introduce myself ' First name Last Name' unless I'm at the bank/hospital/verifying my identity.

emmathedilemma · 30/01/2021 13:26

I'm getting Lou Colton the more I say it! Lucas sounds much better.
Or Lewis / Louis?

PlainJane1000 · 30/01/2021 13:28

Thanks everyone for the replies, I'm feeling better about it overall! Which is a relief as we have struggled to find something else we both love.
@CoodleMoodle out of curiosity what is your Luke's middle name? We haven't started thinking about the middle name options yet as I had focused on an alternative name altogether so far.

@PlainJane1000

Harry Smile We had enough trouble coming up with the first name, the middle was impossible! Then we were between Harry and Henry, and in the end we asked DD which she liked better... She was 4 at the time and thrilled that she got to pick, without giving her free reign to go for something we hated.

OloBo · 30/01/2021 13:52

I might avoid if the surname makes another word without the c sound (e.g. Luke Cash becomes Luke Ash, and the need to explain repeatedly), but not a problem in principle

KirstenBlest · 30/01/2021 15:05

Lou Colton.

Whatsyourflava · 30/01/2021 15:07

Lovely name. I think you're overthinking

cptartapp · 30/01/2021 15:10

DS2 is a Luke C.

EdgeOfACoin · 30/01/2021 16:18

You're overthinking. I mean, if you were equally split between Luke and (say) Matthew and couldn't decide between them, then maybe it would make sense to pick Matthew over Luke on the basis of flow.

However, it's not worth it to jettison a name you love over this. Just leave a micropause between his first and last name when saying them aloud and you will be fine.

cptartapp · 30/01/2021 16:23

LUke William

partyatthepalace · 30/01/2021 20:07

Absolutely fine. Nice name.

musicalfrog · 30/01/2021 20:09

What about Luca?

NotCornflakes · 30/01/2021 20:11

Sounds like "look, see" which would put me off to be honest but I am weird like that!

PlainJane1000 · 31/01/2021 19:04

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I hadn't thought of the look see element @notcornflakes let's hope he is the only one in his class and then he won't end up being referred to as Luke C!

Just to warn you, I have a cousin Luke whom we all call Lu. So it can be shortened!
