Do you love it or hate it? 😎

I'm not keen on the Prim part tbh. It sounds prissy.

How about Posie?

mamablondie33 · 31/01/2021 19:08

I love it and think of the Hunger Games. Love the Prim shortening as well!

The Harold shipman references are a sign of age I’m afraid! I’ve heard of him but no idea who Primrose is. I don’t think a baby Primrose in 2021 will have to worry about that association surely?

bridgetreilly · 31/01/2021 20:18

I'm not a huge fan. How about Priscilla instead?

apric0t · 31/01/2021 20:20

Ooh I love Primrose, going to suggest it to the hubby...

Coconutfatfeast · 31/01/2021 20:38

Primrose is nice. I worked with the loveliest lady who shortened it to Prim. I’ve never heard of Primrose Shipman and I doubt anyone of your DC’s generation will have done either.

Confusednewmum1 · 31/01/2021 20:50

Prefer Pru, Rosie, Penny, Posie - to primrose/prim

VenusClapTrap · 01/02/2021 13:51

I love it. Also love Marigold, Rosemary, Nerine and Narcissa (although sadly the last one has hugely unfortunate connotations, or I would have used it).

ILoveShula · 01/02/2021 19:33

I'm not keen on flower names.as names for girls. Primrose seems a bit try-hard.

YawnyOwl · 01/02/2021 19:35

@LeonaMar

I love it. Primrose and Rosemary were in my possible girl names list
I love these bands but they make me think of primrose Shipman and rosemary west!!
sskanky · 01/02/2021 19:37

I don't think you're setting up your daughter to be taken very seriously in life with a name like Primrose. Sorry.

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 01/02/2021 23:41

Poor Mrs Shipman didn't even do any of the murdering. She just had the bad luck to marry a serial killer. All that aside it's a really twee name. Fine for a pet though.

Porridgeoat · 01/02/2021 23:43

Not keen but adore Rose

Porridgeoat · 01/02/2021 23:44

Peony

snowliving · 01/02/2021 23:47

I think it is a nice vintage name.

ImsorryWilson · 01/02/2021 23:48

You’d get called Hill.
Unless you name actually was Hill.
Then you might get called Dale....

tableanadchairs · 01/02/2021 23:50

Absolutely awful name. Please don’t inflict that on any child 👶

earthyfire · 02/02/2021 01:51

Love it

SkeletorAttack · 02/02/2021 02:31

Hate it - it's such a prissy, wet name (or a good name for a sweet dairy cow...).

rachelrainbow · 02/02/2021 03:52

Top tip fellow MNetters. Don’t get curious about people’s thoughts on your 3mo’s name on this forum... unless your skin is pretty thick. Lesson learnt. 😂

Oh OP I'd never dare do that!

You are brave if foolish.
(I still like the name myself)

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 02/02/2021 04:22

I like it , but don’t love it . Have no idea who Primrose Shipman is!

Sausagedog1 · 02/02/2021 12:41

@rachelrainbow oh no!
Honestly don't let other's opinions upset you.
You obviously love it and you wanted a name that is a bit different for your dd. Any name that is a bit different is going to divide opinion on here!
The only names that are universally liked on Mumsnet are the traditional classics and even then some people will still say they are boring. Primrose is beautiful and it also has the very versatile option of Rose or Rosie if she chooses to use that later on. You made a great choice. Enjoy your baby girl.

KirstenBlest · 02/02/2021 13:33

Change her name to Lily or Olivia, @rachelrainbow. Wink

I had thought about it overnight and it's no different from other flower names. Primroses are pretty.

Having a flowery name isn't going to hold her back, and it's a bit more unusual than Lily, Daisy, Rosie etc.

It's the surname of a former prime minister, so it has something in common with May, Blair and Eden which MNers seem to like a lot as girls' names.

TempsPerdu · 02/02/2021 18:56

@rachelrainbow I replied upthread saying I didn’t like the name - but that’s just my subjective opinion and many will disagree. DD has a name that is very ‘marmite’ - many people think it sounds harsh and we knew this beforehand, but still went with the name because we loved it. We get plenty of compliments on her name irl and it really suits her.

I used to be a primary teacher in London - I’ve come across some very outlandish names in my time, as well as some foreign heritage names that really don’t work in English (sound similar to offensive words etc) - honestly, once you’ve seen the name on the register and perhaps raised an eyebrow you genuinely forget about it, and the kids don’t bat an eyelid about even the most unusual names. Your daughter is more important than her name. Smile

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 02/02/2021 20:04

I wouldn't have said anything if I knew you were asking about a baby who already has that name rather than a bump. It's a risky business as people tend to be brutally honest. But you're looking at your fat cheeked Primrose so it must feel weird to see people criticise her name.

I'm sure she's a joy and a beauty Smile
