Thoughts on Irish little star!

Hi all, after some thoughts... I have a ten month old baby who has an Irish name (his dad's side of the family are Irish) and have another baby due in April that would ideally like to also give an Irish name to. I love the name Rae for a girl and have come across the name Réiltín (pronounced Rae-elle-teen) which is apparently Irish for little star. I am thinking I'd maybe like to call the baby this as their full name but know them as Rei. What do people think of this? If you saw the name Rei would you pronounce it as Rae/Ray? Does anyone in Ireland know of anyone with the name Réiltín as I can't find much about it on the web. Many thanks!

I'm Irish and know 1 child (girl) named Réalta her mother told me it means Star

SeanChailleach · 02/02/2021 18:49

Raonaid is apparently a Hebrew name. Raonadh is Irish for "ruin, destruction" - I can't see it in Teanglann.ie but it is in Dinneen's dictionary.

Marrilou · 03/02/2021 10:25

@SeanChailleach thank you that's interesting to know, think def prefer the meaning 'little star' to 'ruin/destruction'! Grin

Raonaid is not hebrew, thats just what all those american baby name sites say. They make up everything.
Raonadh means tearing or breaking, but can also mean range.

I know two people with this name - one pronounces rail-cheen, the other rail-teen( live in different areas of Ireland)

Yes, I couldn't quickly find anything sensible for Raonaid. Is it an Irish name then?

Réiltín with the Munster pronunciation is growing on me. The spelling "Réailtín" looks better to me for that pronunciation, and I would go further and put "Raeiltín", if it is acceptable within the Caighdeán rules. I know it's controversial to swap out the slender r - please don't jump on me - but this spelling has several advantages.

I think it's lovely! Lovely meaning too. Obviously it's not well-known, but the pronunciation is not that far from the spelling, unlike some Irish names in English. People will spell it wrong all the time though. Better as a middle name?

mathanxiety · 04/02/2021 01:48

Maybe the baby name books were thinking Raonaid is a version of Ronit?

OuiOuiKitty · 04/02/2021 02:02

There are 2 Réiltíns in my dds class in school and another in the year below, it is a gaelscoil though so there are a lot of Irish names there. They pronounce it as Rail teen.
As soon as I saw the thread I knew what the name was going to be. Its not my favourite but it's grand.

Star is french

Just wanted to give an update and say thanks to all who commented; baby Réiltín was born a fortnight ago and her name suits her perfectly Smile Have told friends and family that it's pronounced rail-teen and that it's Rei for short and the response to her name has been really positive (I know it wouldn't ever realistically be negative but people have gone out of their way to comment on it or say how much they like it which is really nice!). So thank you v.much for all the comments as it really did help me make my mind up! Smile

I would say "Ray".
That spelling looks almost Japanese to me though! Maybe I'm thinking of Reiki?
