Love Ivor, was on my list too and I have a Rowan also. Ivan is similar.

I'm not so keen on the others

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 23/01/2021 21:53

Love Jasper and Felix. I would put River with Rowan though.

Flymetothestars · 23/01/2021 22:15

Love Otto, Jasper and Felix

Flymetothestars · 23/01/2021 22:17

Otto, Jasper and Felix all have a similar 'feel' to Rowan, though Rowan higher up in charts than those 3.
Sylvan and Ivor more unusual

partyatthepalace · 23/01/2021 22:17

Don’t mind Ivor. Really don’t like the rest, sorry. Rowan is nice.

Umm... Rory, Miles, Rufus...

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/01/2021 00:33

Although Sylvan matches Rowan best imo (similar "tree" meanings and feel), Felix is my favourite. Jasper is okay, perhaps a little dated but would be my third choice.

Ivor is just too "old man" for me (although weirdly Ivo is not!) and I've always disliked Otto (it's a comedic German stereotype of a name imo).

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 24/01/2021 02:29

Love all except Sylvan!

DramaAlpaca · 24/01/2021 04:18

Sylvan is normally spelled Sylvain. It's French. It does go with Rowan due to the meanings.

I like Jasper with Rowan. Both nature names but the link isn't immediately obvious.

SeanChailleach · 24/01/2021 08:31

Otto and Jasper make me think of otters...
Felix is a very happy name,,Smile
Ivor feels solid, but I think that's to do with Ivor the engine.
Sylvan is a touch ethereal. It goes with the druidic feel of Rowan.

All lovely!

Oneearringlost · 24/01/2021 08:37

Sylvan, spelt Sylvain.

" Sylvan historian who canst thus express a tale more sweetly than our rhyme".

Keats' Ode on a Grecian Urn.

Beautiful, and ethereal as a PP described.

Hazel444 · 24/01/2021 09:15

Thanks everyone!
Sylvan is the Latin spelling, Sylvain would be pronounced differently plus we have no French connection.

I like Ivo too but some people pronounce it 'eye-vo' and some 'eve-o' so I'm not sure which is correct!
Really appreciate all your comments :)

Stellan?
Of your options I like Otto and Jasper, but I’d prefer Otis and Caspar I think. Jasper also strikes me as a pets name.

Starsandglitter · 24/01/2021 12:50

I love Jasper and Felix.
Really don’t like Otto sorry. It just doesn’t sound nice to my ears and feels unfinished?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/01/2021 15:37

OP, as far as I know (in the UK at least) Ivo is always pronounced as Eye -Voh, as it's a variant of Ivor. In other parts of Europe it's possible it may be said as Ev - oh (for instance the name Ida is pronounced as Eh- da in Scandinavia and some other countries).

JemimaTiggywinkle · 24/01/2021 15:46

Jasper and Felix are my favourite, they sound like lovely friendly boys and go well with Rowan.

Otto to me sounds overly German if you don’t have a German connection.. always conjures up for me an image of a little plump man with a moustache in lederhosen.

boxtysandwich · 24/01/2021 15:48

I like Felix the best of your list. I'd steer clear of Sylvan and Ivo for the reasons illustrated above - they'll set him up for a lifetime saying wearily, "no, there's no i in it," or "no, it's Eye-vo, not Ee-vo."

Is your Rowan a boy or a girl? Not that it makes a difference, I just wondered.

Ellmau · 24/01/2021 15:56

Sylvan is the Latin spelling

Not with a y; the letter wasn't used in Latin and it wouldn't end like that either tbh.

Silva is the Latin for a wood.

You could have Silvio (Italian) or Sylvain (French).

Silvanus is the Latin form for the name Silas.

Jasper and Felix are both really great names.

Ivor makes me think of Ivor the engine; I prefer Ivo. Otto a bit Germanic as pp have said.

Flymetothestars · 24/01/2021 16:29

@boxtysandwich
Yes I also wondered if Rowan a girl or boy

I suppose Felix and Jasper are in similar chart positions to Rowan (though the name Rowan currently slightly higher up and rising up the charts much more sharply than the others) so if you are happy with that level of popularity they'd be good options and are nice names. That said Felix and Jasper have reached a plateau and aren't rising at the same speed as Rowan at the moment so will likely be more unusual in the coming years than Rowan will be looking at the graphs.

Names like Otto Sylvan and Ivor much further down the charts , so depends if that's a factor to consider for you or not relevant

Thanks for your thoughts :) I got the info about Sylvan from here and it does seem to be an established name (albeit old fashioned) in its own right rather than a misspelling of Sylvain, Silvio or Silvanus: Sylvan but I take your point that in an etomological way it is not directly of latin origin.

@boxtysandwich my Rowan is a boy :)

Thanks again for all of your thoughts everyone, seems like Jasper and Felix get the most positive comments.

We would really prefer a botanical/nature name but there aren't many good ones for boys/men. I do quite like Silas too, but there was a boy called that in my school who was nicknamed 'Silage' from time to time! River is nice too, but I don't want them to have the same initial.

@Hazel444 jasper is a nature name though. It's a beautiful gem stone! An excellent excellent choice, I love it.

Bluesername · 24/01/2021 18:40

I like Felix, Ivor, Jasper

Yes, I thought this too OP, Jasper being a gem stone name works well with Rowan in many ways - same "nature" links, well known with a similar popularity level, and increasing in numbers like Rowan (although not quite as rapidly as a pp mentioned).

If you aren't sure about Sylvan because of it's rarity and that Felix doesn't have the nature connection - Jasper would be an great compromise choice. Another favourite nature name of mine is Heath, that could be an option?

Santaiscovidfree · 24/01/2021 20:06

I have a Roan, a Fynn and a Gabriel..

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/01/2021 20:08

Or perhaps Fen? (an in the marshland, and despite it being unusual, because it sounds like popular Finn/Flynn he would fit right in with his peers).

Or maybe Fraser? (a subtle link - the Fraser Fir Tree, it also possibly means Strawberry, so would have "Red" ties like Rowan )

Bamboo15 · 24/01/2021 20:22

Issac would be nice with Rowan.
