Belinda, nick name Bee?

I want a traditional name that is unusual and not popular - ahead of the ‘come back curve’ so to speak!

Don’t like the very popular ‘granny’ names for the reason that they are too popular.

OP posts:

My grandmother was Minna. She is on my Mum’s birth certificate as Minnie Ada, anglicised from Minna Hedwig.

My Mum’s generation were all called Jean, Joan, June, Margaret, Sheila, Barbara, Maureen, Kathleen, Madge, Ann and Dorothy. She’s 87.

My sixty something older cousins are Sandra, Janet, Elaine, Carol, Linda, Christine, Susan, Teresa, Anne.

KatherineJaneway · 24/01/2021 07:25

Great name

lunalulu · 24/01/2021 07:45

I like Beatrice better.

Falcone · 24/01/2021 07:52

I knew a a bellinda who was constantly teased and called Bell-ender.

Definitely do not use IMO!

Incyra · 24/01/2021 08:01

I prefer Melissa as mentioned or isn't Melinda a name?

Bluntness100 · 24/01/2021 08:04

I’m not a fan to be honest

I think Beatrice is much nicer, you can still have bea for short.

IggyAce · 24/01/2021 08:09

It’s ok and definitely haven’t come across one.
I think Barbara, Patricia (nn Trixie or Patti) & Susan are due a comeback.

TreesoftheField · 24/01/2021 08:13

Love Susanna. It was on my list along with Rowan, Janet, Bridget and Hazel. Sarah is also lovely I think.
The podcast connection is linked to a small minority, it's not like naming her after an EastEnders character. No one will remember that in 15 years.
I think it's lovely and unusual.

joystir59 · 24/01/2021 08:14

Horrible name imo.

Eeyorehoney · 24/01/2021 08:53

Melinda is the main character on ghost whisperer (Jennifer love hewitt) I’ve always liked that name

Melinda is a pretty name
GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 24/01/2021 09:16

It must be a very regional thing to say it was common. I've only known one Belinda and I'm a decent age. The Belinda I knew was gorgeous and a lovely girl as well. I've heard of the podcast but I don't think it'll be a big factor when the kid is 20 say.

Use it OP and ignore the naysayers Grin

MumUndone · 24/01/2021 09:27

Belinda was my second choice if I'd had a girl, first choice Phillipa. Both so out they're in, in my opinion.

averythinline · 24/01/2021 09:56

Belinda is the same as Brenda in my ears..really don't like it would not think literary...more lumpy, dowdy? Was there one in Dinnerladies? Maybe its an age thing... I know 6 Barbara's! And 5 Katharines although they varied age group I couldn't use it ....

Melissa is lovely and is healing herb
Rosemary also

Peggy is short for Margaret one of my favourite nn but Dh wasn't a fan..

dementedma · 24/01/2021 09:57

Bridget is nice
Minnie is what some people coyly use to refer to female genitals!

youvegottenminuteslynn · 24/01/2021 10:02
@stellarfox Ive never heard of it - was it really well known? What could Minnie be short for? Unfortunately it just reminds me of the mouse
Minnie could be short for Minerva or Hermione. Really lovely names.

Twisique · 24/01/2021 10:43

How about Daphne?

Twisique · 24/01/2021 10:44

Minnie nn for Araminta Minevra Minerva Amanda Amelia

VenusClapTrap · 24/01/2021 15:15

I like Belinda. The one I know is very well to do and shortens it to Binny.

How about:
Simone
Dinah
Marjolaine

midsomermurderess · 24/01/2021 16:46

I think Muriel might fit the bill. A child with that name will not have peers who think, ooh, wedding.

Thewiseoneincognito · 24/01/2021 16:51

Belinda sounds like Elaine, Karen and Sandra. I can’t ever see them making a comeback.

PursuingProxemicExactitude · 24/01/2021 16:52

You can't have a Susanna and a Muriel. They just don't go together.

Susanna is grand opera. Muriel is sitcom ...

Thelma goes with Muriel
WTAFIhavelosttheferret · 24/01/2021 17:01

@LyndaSnellsSniff

Not keen on Belinda, but Beatrice is lovely.

I heard about a new baby called Peggy the other day. Hi-De-Hi connotations aside, I thought it was rather a lovely name.

Peggy is short for Margaret.
KeeefBurtain · 24/01/2021 17:08

Bernice is nicer than Beatrice and could still use the Bee nickname.
