Belinda, nick name Bee?

I want a traditional name that is unusual and not popular - ahead of the ‘come back curve’ so to speak!

Don’t like the very popular ‘granny’ names for the reason that they are too popular.

Not keen. In my class at school in the ‘70s we had two Lindas and a Belinda.

FamilyOfAliens · 23/01/2021 22:59

@GlamGiraffe

Honour Belinda nn Honey Bee
You’re joking, right?

May as well call her Honey Boo Boo while you’re at it.

BackforGood · 23/01/2021 23:11

I rather like Belinda.
Like you say, "known" but nobody else being called it unlike so many of the oder names that have become very overused.

Know a Belinda and she is a lovely young woman! I like the name

StartupRepair · 23/01/2021 23:18

I work with a lovely one who is in her late 40s. Nicknames Bee or Bel.

cheapskatemum · 23/01/2021 23:24

It was the name I chose for my favourite doll! I was also at school with a Belinda who’d be in her 60s now. Lovely name.

Minnie is short for Hermione as well as Minerva

Peggy reminds me of Mad Men

Whatthebloodyell · 23/01/2021 23:28

If I had another girl she would be Elizabeth, so classic.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/01/2021 23:47

It's so strange how people can view a name very differently. To me Belinda is nothing like Karen, Lorraine, Brenda, Barbara, Beverly etc as it's never been popular enough to really date or feel out of fashion (as it's never really been fashionable imo). To me Belinda feels the same as names like Lorna and Vanessa - it's an older literary name with a very feminine, romantic feel.

chillied · 23/01/2021 23:56

I think Melissa, Marissa or Vanessa would be better than Belinda

borntohula · 24/01/2021 00:07

I think it's awful, really can't imagine it on a baby or a little girl but I'm clearly in the minority!

Bouledeneige · 24/01/2021 00:16

Having grown up in the 70s I really don't like Belinda - to me its exactly akin to Linda, Julie, Jackie, Tracy, Laura, Janet and Karen.

I like Bea though.

I also like (trying to steer clear of the most obviously popular names):
Juliet
Josephine
Anna
Collette
Thea
Lucy
Stella
Estelle
Rosalind
Stevie

RAOK · 24/01/2021 00:27

Beatrice nn Bea

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 24/01/2021 00:34

Noooo! Bell-Ender! Did you NOT go to school in the 80s/90s?! Grin

whoamongstus · 24/01/2021 00:38

Another one saying it'd remind me of My Dad Wrote a Porno hahaha - sorry!

I do think it'd be due a comeback otherwise but it's one of the most downloaded podcasts of all time so I reckon it's tainted now 😂

coronafiona · 24/01/2021 04:34

Penelope: Penny?

intheshallows · 24/01/2021 05:21

I really don't like it- sorry. MUCH prefer Beatrix if you like Bea though.

Sendingasurprise · 24/01/2021 05:28

Black in the 60's I was almost called Belinda. It's prettier than my own name, but not keen on the 'Linda' part. Do you like:

Justine
Lindsey
Meredith
Fiona
Helen
Christina
Aileen
Louisa
Kate
Juliet

eaglejulesk · 24/01/2021 05:40

Belinda is a lovely name OP.

ILoveStickers · 24/01/2021 06:37

Not my taste, but disagree that it's modern or down-market. There were never enough of them in the UK.

Looks like it was a top ten name in Australia in the 60s, though, and top 200 in the US in the 70s.

I'd prefer something like:
Marissa
Melissa
Vanessa
Veronica
Melinda

happylittlechick · 24/01/2021 06:54
@happylittlechick I don’t get it 🙈 is it from the podcast?
Yes. You should listen to the podcast. It's very funny.

PursuingProxemicExactitude · 24/01/2021 07:07

I too was at school in the 70s ...

Other names (apart from Suzanna) at my rather smart school included:

Louise
Barbara
Clare
Helena
Frances
Katherine
Christina
Jaqueline (love this name).

Snapsnapcrocodile · 24/01/2021 07:11

Really amazed at the ‘chav’ accusations! I only know two Belindas: one in her eighties who is very grand indeed and the other in her fifties who is only slightly less aristocratic... and she is called Bee by her family.

Minnie is a name in its own right, but was also commonly a short form of Wilhelmina rather than Minerva as suggested up thread. (For all those disappointing girls due to be called William if they’d been a boy.)
