DH has a cousin who is a lord called Edmund his brothers are Christopher and Jonathon.

DS has a Floris, a Monty, a Rex and a Toby in his class. None especially posh.

I love Edmund. Wanted DC1 to be Edmund.

Rupert
William
James
John(nie)
Charles
Mark
Agree with PP, aristocratic names tend to be solid traditional names, but also have the oddest public schoolboy related nicknames!

ohsuzannah · 23/01/2021 23:49

Ralph pronounced Rafe, I've always liked it!

colouringindoors · 23/01/2021 23:52

Hugo.

Percival
Walter
Xander

Quite posh.

A lot of these names sound like names for a puppy to me 😬😆

Eustace, Jeremy, Ambrose.
I like Edmond too.
They all remind me of Enid Blyton.
I wonder where St. John comes from.
I like the name Lucinda for a girl

As we have established, proper aristocratic boys’ names are usually quite boring (see: the Royal Family) but there is sometimes a traditional family name in there to make it more interesting/torture the poor recipient. I know of:

Josceline
Algernon
Orlando
Torquil
Peregrine

My view is that these names are (maybe) all very well if they are your ancestor from 1350 and you are keeping the flame alive, but are best avoided if not.

I have a Tristan and am always quite surprised when it pops up in posh name threads (although I'm aware some people don't think it's posh at all! But I prefer the connotation with the 10 year old lord than the roughest boy at school!)

I always sort of though it used to be posh but wasn't any more. I liked it because it sounds romantic and it's pretty much an unheard of name where we live. I thought it reminded me of someone who might be in a 90's boy band and my midwife said it was a Home and Away type name Grin

I agree with a PP who said it’s all about the surnames and family names as middles names, possibly also multiple middle names. So FirstName MiddleName de Montford Wellborne. A posh family I know, all the boys have the middle name McAffey (in amongst a first name, another middle name and then surname), including all the cousins.

As for first names, the ones that are being mentioned that some posters are surprised are seen as posh eg Edward, Theodore etc- I feel like posher people are more likely to give these as full names whereas others will just give the nicknames as the name on the birth certificate eg Teddy, Harry instead of Henry. Even Jack- the posh 5yo Jack I know is John on birth cert.

Oreservoir · 24/01/2021 08:16

@Carysmatthews I loved Jolyon too but dh wouldn’t have it.
When ds was a few months old I bumped into an ex bf and he and his dw had just had a boy and called him Jolyon. That was spooky.

Surely most of us reserve posh names for our pets.

MrsSmith2021 · 24/01/2021 08:17

Edward, Rupert, Arthur.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/01/2021 12:21

Thanks, Jigglyjugs!

I wasn't expecting you to post your actual name - the intrigue continues, though!!

YoniAndGuy · 24/01/2021 14:47

Crispin

PumpkinCroutons · 24/01/2021 15:39

Poshest people I know named their Dcs Peter and Edward.

Peter is the oldest about 14 and I recall thinking how unusual it was at the time. I love it now.

PumpkinCroutons · 24/01/2021 15:40

(Mind you, Peter will in the fullness of time become Lord xxx and so there will only be one of him around.)
