@SleepingStandingUp

Can I just ask why people are trying to find so-called 'posh' names for their offspring?
  1. it's a light hearted hypothetical thread
  2. Few people actually pick names because they think it'll somehow elevate their specialness. They just pick names they like. I've been told my name's are try hard. But the only thing we tried hard to do was pick names we liked
Thanks for the explanation but I’d always assumed parents would always choose names that they liked? It would seem contrary to do otherwise, no? I’m guessing that you’ve felt hurt by being told the names of your offspring are ‘try hard’?
AnaisNun · 23/01/2021 18:02

The really posh boys I know from uni (family piles and titles waiting for them types) all had names like James and Edward, and invariably wanted to be called Jim or Ed.

borntohula · 23/01/2021 18:03

Is Theodore posh? I like Theodore.

Bisquiteen · 23/01/2021 18:04

So is the consensus of opinion that ‘posh’ names are to be embraced or rejected?

CupboardOfJoy · 23/01/2021 18:05

My dad knew a very posh bloke, Louis, but everyone called him Dickie.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/01/2021 18:05

Thanks for the explanation but I’d always assumed parents would always choose names that they liked? It would seem contrary to do otherwise well if you know that parents just pick names they like, why are you asking why people specifically pick "posh names"? Surely that answers your own question?

I’m guessing that you’ve felt hurt by being told the names of your offspring are ‘try hard’? Just bemused tbh, no one has given me a satisfactory answer to the "trying hard to do what?" for me to be in anyway upset. My kids have awesome names

I don't know of it's too popular to be "posh"
whatausername · 23/01/2021 18:06

Hatshepsut for a girl.
Hey, if I'm artistocratic I can get away more easily with the crazy ;-)

TheBeesKnee · 23/01/2021 18:07

Not rtft so apologies if someone has beaten me to the punch... Have a look at the telegraph birth announcements and pick a name from there.

Otherwise William is a solid choice.

Sadly, it doesn't answer my question does it? Yes, I had previously assumed that parents chose names because they liked them but it seems that their relative 'poshness' also has to be taken into account and that is the bit that's puzzling me. I just named my children after relatives like I said but I suppose I could equally have perused the names of the characters in Downton Abbey to find 'posh' names to either embrace or reject. I'm still not sure why names have to be run through a posh-o-meter? What is the ultimate goal here?

I'm glad that you like your kids' names. I'm very fond of the ones I've chosen too and that is all that matters :D

PeskyRooks · 23/01/2021 18:16

Rafferty
Endeavour

Well my posh twins are now Cosima and Pandora, sisters to Catinka 🥰🥰🥰
GameSetMatch · 23/01/2021 18:17

I call my youngest ‘little Lord Fountleroy’

Arobase · 23/01/2021 18:24

If I had to give my child a posh name, presumably it would be because I'd married into a posh family. In that event I suspect I wouldn't have much choice and s/he would have to be called after his/her ancestors. So it would be a case of digging out the old family tree and choosing the least objectionable name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/01/2021 20:23

Don't find Edward or Rufus especially posh OP, but agree your other choices are a bit (secretly love Ptolemy!). However it seems a bit unfair imo to intentionally choose a name that labels your child as "posh" even if you are (what if your child doesn't want an upper class sounding name?)

Realistically I'd chose something more classic feeling like Maximilian (still perhaps a bit posh sounding but it's a lovely name with a long history and he can easily be more popular/common Max if he chooses).

PattyPan · 23/01/2021 20:31

I LOVE the name Rupert and will be subtly priming DP into liking it in case we ever have a boy Grin I also like Felix and Toby which are vaguely posh.

Nohomemadecandles · 23/01/2021 20:32

I have a 9 year old Rufus. It seems to be a marmite name from the reception over the years. But to him, it's just his name. And we aren't posh. I mean, we're not anything really! It suits him.

Nohomemadecandles · 23/01/2021 20:34

My "actually" posh friends have kids with really normal names! William and Charlie and James.

SnowFields · 23/01/2021 20:36

@LittleBearPad

Edward and Henry - really?
The Royal Family seem to think so.
QAplomb · 23/01/2021 20:41

Ferdinand (Ferdy).

Whynotnowbaby · 23/01/2021 20:45

A branch of my family is quite posh, they all have very nondescript names- Anna, Kate, James, William etc but are almost exclusively known within the family by random, unconnected “pet” names - Boo, Splig, Ants etc. I think if you want to appear really posh, you just need to come up with some sort of daft nickname and use it at all times!

Natsku · 23/01/2021 20:55

My son has an emperor name - Konstantin, though we never actually call him by that, its always shortened form or nicknames, I sometimes forget that's his actual name.

LogBasketOfDreams · 23/01/2021 21:02

I have a lovely and verrrr posh friend who is St.John Hugh Harold.

I think the middle names were his Mum's brothers.

If DH had wanted something of that nature I suspect I'd want Jolyon.

Carysmatthews · 23/01/2021 21:05

@Palavah

Jolyon Mungo Aloysius

It's also about the middle names - family surnames rather than first names. But think de Lacy rather than Jackson.

I always loved Jolyon from the Forsyte Saga.
MarshaBradyo · 23/01/2021 21:07

Rupert is my favourite boy’s name but I ended up using as middle name only
