I was planning to name a son Ralph (pronounced Rafe) after a relative, but we adopted DS so he came with a name (which meant he was the same name as a different relative).

SleepingStandingUp · 23/01/2021 10:20

The poshest person I know is called Dave.

Oreservoir · 23/01/2021 10:20

@CoronaIsWatching. Are you aristocratic and not happy with the plebs getting above themselves?

LandlordLottie · 23/01/2021 10:26

I have a failsafe rule: any boys’ name ending in ‘o’ immediately says, “Not as posh as I’d like to be.”

The upper class men I know have names obviously chosen quite deliberately to help them hide in plain sight: Will, James, Ed, John.

Rangoon · 23/01/2021 10:26

According to some old article in Tatler, Patrick is up there in terms of posh. I suppose it would be helpful to have at least some Irish ancestry though.

Updatemate · 23/01/2021 10:27

My DC has one of those names Blush not because we're posh or wannabe posh but because we liked it.

I love Ptolemy!

BarbiesWorld · 23/01/2021 10:40

Please can someone explain the pronunciation of Ptolemy to me? My sleep deprived brain can't work it out

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/01/2021 10:44

With St John many people won't know that it has a completely different pronunciation to the way it is written. There will be constant confusion.

I realise I'm showing my age and that children born now will probably never see it (or at least won't have it as a familiar point of cultural reference), but I just can't hear St John without instantly thinking of Goodness Gracious Me's Surjit and Veena Rabindranath, who pretentiously adopt the more English-sounding St John and Vanessa Robinson!

Yep I’m confused 🤣 it’s not said as in St. John’s ambulance? Clearly there’s nothing posh about me 🤣

Ptolemy is usually just 'TOLLER-mee', with a silent 'P'.

FlyingSquid · 23/01/2021 10:48

@OhMsBeliever

I have a son called Barnaby. Definitely not posh, and I don't think I'm pretentious. I just chose a name I liked (from one of my favourite childhood books that I was re-reading when I was pregnant with him) as I did with all my children.

I also loved Ptolemy, but wasn't brave enough for that!

The Dark is Rising? Or was that Barnabas?
badacorn · 23/01/2021 10:48

@Catty1720
I think it’s pronounced sinjun when it’s a first name.

Just give your kid a name you like. Most posh people I know have quite traditional names not on that list.

jiggetyjig · 23/01/2021 10:50

Henry
Charles
Giles
Rupert
Sebastian
Frederick
Benedict

lovelemoncurd · 23/01/2021 10:51

Tarquin- no I wouldn't ever but as a joke that's the name that's most wanky!

Catty1720 · 23/01/2021 10:52

Ah I see thank you, I never knew that

Just go with a name you like my only personal rules when picking my DC names is how will it sound when they are an adult. And will it cause them problems in schools/interviews when someone can’t pronounce it. Even my name I’ve always had ‘is that with a c or a k’

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/01/2021 11:03

My brain has completely short-circuited, having read Crispin and Ptolemy and smooshed them together, so I've now got Crispian St Peters going around in my head, singing "Hey, come on, babe, Ptolemy - I'm the Pied Piper" Grin

I really wanted Thaddeus and Balthazar for the twins but I wasn't sure I could pull it off with my black country state school kids

I’m loving this thread. It’s cracking me up 😂 The thought of all those little Tarquins and St Johns running out of primary school into the loving arms of parents, Ryan and Jade is hilarious. Sorry if it’s not meant to be funny but prole drift is always funny 😳
