Bea as a middle name?

I’d like a one syllable middle name if my baby is a girl but struggling to find one that sounds right and isn’t one of those ‘filler’ middle names like Rose, Grace or May.

I like Bea but it sounds it should be short for something. What do you think? Any other suggestions?

I think you could use it. I've only known it as a shortened version of Beatrice or Beatrix but it looks nice on its own.

Joy is a lovely one syllable middle name too.

I think it would look fine written down, but when you say it, it sounds like the letter B and sounds like you’re saying just the middle initial.

E.g. sounds like Daisy B. Smith

I'm not keen tbh...on its own, it just makes me think of bees! Whereas when it is a shortening it seems fine for some reason. Also seems like an initial "Sophie Bea Jones" or "Sophie B. Jones".

Thanks all! I’ve actually used joy as a middle name for my oldest DD so that’s out! But good to know it’s liked.

I like Eve. I think Jo and Beth have a similar problem as Bea- they seem like nicknames!

Bea does sound super cute with the name we’ve chosen but I’m still not convinced

Eve is gorgeous suggestion - classic, simple and elegant. However I don't see anything wrong with Bea as a middle name (I think it's cute as I think of Bee's!). If it was a first name I'd suggest using something more substantial (Beatrice/Beatrix or another B name like Blythe or Bryony) , but middle names, as they are rarely used day to day are where you can have fun imo!

I love Bea too, reminds me of the daughter in one of my favourite books. Definitely use it!

I like Bea! We're using Ruth as one of the middle names and I love that it's short because the other middle name is 2 syllables and our surname is 2 so short is good!

Eve is lovely. Bea is just an abbreviation in my opinion, but then I've a bit of a thing for that - when dp told me the name of his dd, my first thought was that's a shortening

Could you use Bee instead? I feel that would feel complete whereas Bea does look as if it's short for Beatrice.

A friend's DD is Catherine Beatrice, but everybody - and I mean everybody - calls her Katie B. If the letter on its own would bother you then don't do it! Otherwise it's lovely.

It sounding like a letter on its own doesn't bother me. People looking at it and thinking 'eh? that isn't a name' does!

I once met a little girl called honey bee.
I thought it was a lovely name.
Not sure how much she will like it as a teen or adult. But I liked it.

I think honey bee is a step too far in cute! Can you imagine having to introduce yourself as an adult!?

Bea is an Irish name spelt "Buí" or "Buidhe".
"Buidhe" means "gratitude, thanks" also "yellow, tawny, sunburnt, sunny, summerlike". (From Dinneen's 1927 "Foclóir Gaeilge agus Béarla.)
There's an ancient poem that begins:

"Mise Buidhe
Sean chailleach Béarra"

That means "I am Buidhe, an old woman from Beara". She goes on to describe the glory days of her youth and says how lonely and boring it is being old. It is a very famous poem. However, I can't put my hand on the exquisite 10th century original, nor a good translation. Maybe someone else can?

It’s short for Beatrice / Beatrix

If I just want it to be Bea, I think I’d spell it Bee, which it’s quite nice If you like 🐝. As long as her first name isn’t on the twee side...
