Portia is a lovely name.

The problem with it comes when others only hear it spoken and don;t see it written down.

Everyone will assume her name is Porsche.

WomenAndVulvas · 11/01/2021 10:42

I agree, it's a nice name but too similar to Porsche.

RubyFakeLips · 11/01/2021 11:15

Gorgeous name.

Don't think it matters that it similar to Porsche. Not a designer name (like Gucci/Armani/Paniro) as its a classic, Shakespearean first name in its own right, and spelt differently. Only will seem try hard if you're flash and tend to be the type of person with a Porsche. Why does it matter if similar to another word that doesn't have bad connotations?

People who know her will come to associate that name with her.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 11/01/2021 11:23

I like it. It's uncommon and will suit a little girl and woman equally.

Sway19 · 11/01/2021 11:28

Porsche?

Santaiscovidfree · 11/01/2021 11:30

It's a dcat name.
Portia was a Persian I believe....

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/01/2021 12:00

So pretty sounding and Shakespearean but I really struggle to get past the Pig thing (which is weird because I don't have the same problem with Claudia and Cecilia). But maybe most people wouldn't have this association? The car thing wouldn't bother me though.

Yukaplant · 11/01/2021 12:05

I assumed people know it's a name and different to a car.
It's a cool, different name. I wouldn't worry about some people spelling it wrong, I mean it's very different in my opinion

ManchesterLassie · 11/01/2021 12:22

It means Pig, Hog or Doorway. If you are Ok with this then it's fine, as ultimately it is your choice.

Meanwhile a distant cousin has just named her child Dago.

Not actually told them what the connotations of the name are, they are both adult enough to know.

merryhollybright · 11/01/2021 12:26

It was the cat in Notes on a Scandal. So it makes me think of Judi Dench Grin

DacwMamYnDwad · 11/01/2021 12:44

Lovely. Was on our list. Family name.

MrsB2019x · 11/01/2021 13:29

Honestly it’s a bit Hollyoaks for me.. (thinking along the same lines of Mercedes, Chardonnay etc)

Couldn’t explain my reasoning but that’s the first thing that came to my head!

ILoveShula · 11/01/2021 13:56

It's Shakespearean.

YoniAndGuy · 11/01/2021 15:03

It's quite nice. But, too close to Porsche yes.

Prefer Petra or Tertia.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 11/01/2021 16:27

Makes me think of pigs but I don't know why? Does it have something to do with pigs?

scrivette · 11/01/2021 16:28

It's lovely.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 11/01/2021 16:31

Just Googled and apparently it meana 'pig, hog or doorway' Confused and yeah sounds like the car which seems a bit naff (and yes it is spelt differently but how often do you spell out your name for people you meet)

notalwaysalondoner · 11/01/2021 21:13

I don't dislike it as a name but dislike the pig and 'Portly Portia' nickname potential.

LittleGwyneth · 12/01/2021 10:56

I like it but the Porshe thing is unfortunate. What about Perdita?
